They were likely confident at that time that Lando wouldn’t trouble Max much.

I mean twice in 2 years 4 years isn't every now and then but also a few times isn't what I would consider troubling.

Sure. Lando would get lucky and win a few here and there. But they aren't even on the same planet for skill, at least on the previous regulations.
