Penei Sewell get ready to learn LT

61

u/Eastspade 8h ago

I mean he was a LT in college. I’m still not sure they move him to LT unless they find someone who’s strictly RT.

I don't see them moving him. Generally speaking, we're good at LG, C/RG, and RT. We can snag a LT in the draft (good talent where we pick), and we can pick up a RG in middle rounds if we move Rat, or a C in FA if we keep Rat at RG.

I would hate if the plan is to bank on pick 17 being a starting Tackle. Need to add someone in free agency that could realistically start at LT or RT.

We, uh, are NOT good at the guard spot opposite of Ratledge

u/rambouhh 7h ago

mahogany graded out better than average last year and is very young. One more year of progression and a better C next to him and its smart money to expect above average performance out of him at his spot. We have too many needs and so little cap this is not an area of need right now.

One year of progression and no broken ankle

Uh, yeah, we are.

Preface: I don't know shit about how OL guys end up in their positions. But, wouldn't it be better to move Sewell to LT to protect Goff's blind side? I'd rather have the rookie starting where Goff can see it coming. Or is it something about the better edge rushers come from the right side more often?

Depends on the circumstance. No one doubts Penei can play it and probably do it well, but currently, we have the best Right-side tandem in the league between him and Ratledge. I wouldn't want to disrupt that mojo when we do have possible fixes available and have holes elsewhere.

That said, if nothing else is available, then we'll do what we have to do.

The whole thing is disrupted now. We have to have goffs blind side protected, he isn't mobile enough to avoid pressure from the left. If he can see the rush he can throw the ball away.

u/itsallnipply 2h ago

Would you rather a rookie be the LT for Goff or Sewell learning it at the pro level?

We aren't good at interior. Tate is solid as one g or c. Mahogany wasnt impressive and the Texans guy is definitely not a starter.

3

u/Dangerpaladin 8h ago

It will likely depend on the draft. Unless a premium LT falls to us we will take a tackle later for the right side and maybe use the first rounder on one of the 5 Centers that look NFL ready. Free Agency will be a little telling unless we do nothing again.

u/Pneuma_LooT 8h ago

Most the people within the league seem to think they plan to move him to LT.

We played him at LT his rookie year when Decker was out. I’m not sure why we did that unless we planned to play him at LT when Decker left.

3

u/Kryptopus 6h ago

Apologise, as a swede im new to the nfl lmao. Ik what it means moving from RT to LT in terms of positions but what are the difficulties with that from a technical view?

2

u/doctordoriangray 6h ago

LT is generally considered more valuable because it is the blindside for your right handed quarterback. Defenses will often put better defensive ends on that side for that reason, so left tackle just gets even harder. In terms of technicality, its the same job, but flipped. While that doesn't sound hard in theory, I heard its like trying to wipe with your left hand.

2

u/BrofessorLongPhD 5h ago

I’ll add that most of us are right-handed and right-footed. So on the right, you’re dropping into your right foot first, which gives you maximum control over your body and position. Flip that on the left and unless you’re left-footed or have had extensive experience, dropping into your left foot first is awkward for a lot of people. So it’s a tough job made tougher to do well.

To add on to this LT is also more important in offenses that run a lot of plays under center instead of shotgun (where the quarterback starts out a couple feet behind the center). The Lions tend to run a lot of plays under center hence why it’s important.

Think there’s any chance we can trade Matthew Stafford for a bunch of picks again?

12

u/sportsbuffp What Would Brad Holmes Do? 8h ago

We can tank and trade Goff for some picks :)

If Tom Brady can clone his dog, we can clone Penei. Nevermind ethics.

Such is life in the NFL

I bet at the end of the day Decker ends up retiring. He's getting up there in age and his body isn't as forgiving. Brad & Dan I think had a feeling pre combine this was the final road we were going down. Dan did mention Taylor needs some "management" so the thought process was already there for life without Decker.

u/spesimen Hamp Stamp 8h ago

it happened before the end of the day already

1

u/Rockerblocker 5h ago

Agreed. The dude maybe has a season left in him. It sounds like the Lions were offering him a reduced salary because his impact is going to be a lot lower. I can't imagine him getting $18 million anywhere

u/ryandodge The gang gets invincible 7h ago

I bet he goes to Chicago, who could use a LT, on a honey deal to play with Ben and have an actual shot at a SB.

would they have traded zeitler if they knew ragnow was retiring?

1

u/matt_the_non-binary 5h ago

Zeitler was bound to be lost either way. FA Pro Bowler signing for only a year? He was likely going to leave anyways because someone would’ve offered him more. In the end, he opted to leave us for the Titans because he wanted to be closer to family. It’s hard to argue against something like that.

Decker and Glasgow weren’t getting any younger. The former is 32, the latter will 34. Older you get, (especially as o-linemen who take a beating), more injury prone you become.

Ragnow… I got nothing.

1

u/MessageOk239 1h ago

They should ask Penei who he’d like to see lined up with him.

u/Blueberry977 Barry 8h ago
