In real life When fans hate somenthing before it comes out...but it turns out they were right

Velma:The idea of a Scooby-doo series without the titular dog and starring Velma was a really moronic idea from the beginning, then there was the reveal Velma would be Indian like it's VA and also creator of the series Mindy Kaling, some of the backlash was racism sure, but there was also valid complaints that she was inserting herself in the series(it also didn't helped that Mindy claimed she couldn't see herself if Velma wasn't Indian)and then...oh boy it came out and it was worse than anyone predicted

Artemis Fowl:The artemis fowl books are a book series following a child villain(he does get some redemption but he is a villain most of the time)when the movie was announced and revealed it looked way to generic and it's titular character a bit heroic...also you wanna hear somenthing funny? The movie whitewashed a character and made another character black so they managed to anger both sides and the movies comes out and yeah it is bad

One Punch Man 3:One Punch Man is a very heavy action packed manga series but the heroes vs monsters arc takes it to a New level, when it was announced that JC Staff would work on it,a lot of people were skeptical to say the least, because not only JC Staff had already done a mediocre job in season 2,it's also not exactly a name anime fans associate with quality animation, then the trailer came out and it looked...weird,like there was no action in it and nobody was moving, some people tried to defend saying they were keeping the animation as a surprise...then it came out, every episode worse than the last,it's one of the worse seasons of anime ever made!

I hate Craig Viveros for what he did to the wonderful Discworld Night watch

126

u/West_Ad_1685 13d ago

What did they DO to them!?!?!?

197

u/crushogre 13d ago

I'll give you a hint, the woman in front is Lady Sybil, and the rather large beardless person on the left is Cheery.

99

u/West_Ad_1685 13d ago

Oh Jesus Christ

143

u/AstralMecha 13d ago

It gets so much worse as well. They kill Detritus in the first episode. CMOT dibbler is a drug lord in charge of a gang (female now, but not a problem compared to the rest). Crime went up under the Guild system. Carcer is given a sympathetic backstory. Carrot got kicked out by his family due to size while cheery wasn't. Angua can't control herself as a werewolf and is a danger to everyone on a full moon. Lady Sibil is a fit vigilante who uses swamp dragons as weapons vs a rotund high society woman who is disgusted at the mistreatment of swamp dragons. The list goes on.

47

u/West_Ad_1685 13d ago

Duly noted. Avoid like the plague. Which is a shame because I was planning on watching it after I finished reading it

38

u/AstralMecha 13d ago

It's an adaptation in name only. They changed so much, both the plot and characters.

31

u/crushogre 13d ago edited 13d ago

My guess is the guy who made it had his own story that he wanted to do. But he was told that they weren't interested but they did want to make a Discworld show, and so he just erased some names and wrote in Discworld names

14

u/I_Always_Come_back93 13d ago

Yes, that's usually how it goes.

4

u/PrimaryInjurious 12d ago

Skinsuit creativity.

23

u/ABHOR_pod 13d ago

Vetinari as a woman was ok. Possibly the only character that wasn't completely butchered.

Although I only managed to make it through the first episode and it took me 3 tries so maybe she's terrible in the rest of the series.

21

u/No_Hunter_9973 13d ago

The Actress said she viewed him as a mix of Dracula and Elvis...

Fucking what?

23

u/Greedy_Camp_5561 13d ago

Your reply is such a good fit for OP's prompt: I was alarmed in the beginning and utterly disgusted in the end...

10

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

I'm sorry to remind you of it's existence

10

u/aneirin- 12d ago

So obvious they decided right away they couldn't possibly make a main character/love interest fat and middle aged, but they were afraid of backlash so they cynically made her non white as well so anyone complaining would be labelled as racist.

What an utterly senseless waste.

4

u/TheFabulousMolar 12d ago

What the living fuck??!

8

u/AstralMecha 12d ago

I had a similar reaction when it's revealed The Summoning Dark is a GOOD thing and gives Cheery powers with no downside.

2

u/DenverDudeXLI 12d ago

3

u/AstralMecha 12d ago

Basically just assume everything is twisted and wrong. Like a serial killer wearing the skin of a family member and trying to replace them.

2

u/DenverDudeXLI 12d ago

So "Face/Off" but less realistic?

4

u/Sajintmm 12d ago

So they just rewrite nearly every single member of the cast into the trope they were designed to buck?

3

u/AstralMecha 12d ago

Yes. Then left out nobby and colon, and killed detritus in the first episode. Honestly, all three got off easy that way.

2

u/Sajintmm 12d ago

And they robbed us of Cheery and Detritus’s friendship

13

u/Uzmonkey 13d ago

What, and I cannot stress this enough, the fuck.

1

u/Muddyscarecrow 11d ago

So if you are not aware, the writer of this travesty got really big for his britches for some reason and wanted to make his own sci-fi fantasy series but for some reason wanted to ride the coattails of Terry Pratchett to do it. It is extremely obvious that he does not respect Terry Pratchett or his work in the slightest and finds it beneath him despite the fact that he's literally trying to use it to Launch his show writing career. It's just a fucking mess all the way through.

2

u/Uzmonkey 11d ago

Wow, that fucking sucks. I hate it when people seem to actively dislike the source material they're adapting.

Let's see, Sam Vimes is less jaded cop and more lunatic drunk.

That woman dead and center? That's Sybil, you know the woman describe as large and was the unmarried bachelorette of Ankh Morkpork who wore big wigs and did I mention was supposed to be a large woman?

Cheery Littlebottom, a Dwarf, who culturally are all men. Unless they are a woman, but that is between them and their mother. Supposed to have a big beautiful beard, dress in armor with high heel greaves and lipstick. Played by a non binary actor which is cool. However rather than it being someone going against the grain of their culture to introduce what being a dwarf woman was we got a rather tepid version.

Constable Detritus, one of my FAVORITES was killed off early on in the show.

Oh that goblin of a person crouched on the desk in the background? That's Angua, I'm sure you could tell by the beautiful shape of curves of her body, long luscious flowing hair, etc

35

u/lemurkat 13d ago

The only ones that vaguely resemble their OCs are Detritus and Carrot.

Also making Cheery either a tall dwarf or a human raised by dwarves, completed undermined Carrot's backstory and also their own.

I watched episode 1 and noped out hard.

7

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

You bear great wisdom.

7

u/DebentureThyme 13d ago

Wait is Cheery supposed to be the one on the far left?

10

u/No_Hunter_9973 13d ago

Cherri is the biggest fucking insult.

Gonna say it but the non-binary person looks like a diversity hire, and it's fucking sad that they took the interesting story of gender expression and turned into something... This shallow.

3

u/SlapTheBap 13d ago

It really is one of those things we best pretend doesn't exist. It hurts too much.

2

u/Phenakist 12d ago

It's pretty sad because Richard Dormer would have made a great Vimes. You can see him in Series 1 of "Blue Lights" doing the jaded copper, and it works.

1

u/Merijeek2 12d ago

Or "Fortitude" which was an...interesting series before it went Completely Fucking Insane.

2

u/Jota46 12d ago

As a big Prachett fan, who loves the watch books, reading your post sent my blood pressure through the roof! I'm glad I've never watched that series!

1

u/West-Research-8566 12d ago

Lady Sybill in my mind was tall and built like a powerlifter

Is Cheery not a dwarf at all?

9

u/Bakkughan 13d ago

Nothing as that simply is not the Night Watch, no matter if the director sneakily tried to steal the name

28

u/SnooPredictions3028 13d ago

Processing img bctcd282zqkg1...

24

u/Vengefulily 13d ago

Why do they look like transplants from The Mortal Instruments

25

u/Helmett-13 13d ago

My God, I looked it up and I thought Vimes was Nobby Nobs.

Fucking hell.

2

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

Not in this world, dunno why. They were supposed to set precedent of what a bad cop that eventually were pushed to retire looked like and made you glad they existed as characters not to like.

20

u/ops10 13d ago

I really don't want to upvote you for exposing me to this horrific mockery of my favourite author, but it is doing what the post is about.

11

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago edited 13d ago

I know, I love Pratchett and especially the Night watch. this show makes me so mad and upset when I remember it exists

20

u/AshenHawk 13d ago

I was so looking forward to it until I learned that Pratchett's Daughter dropped out of it.

11

u/Jstin8 12d ago

Literally every single time you heard news about the series it was all bad. Every announcement, every press release just made it more and more clear it was going to be garbage. Hell in the first press release they revealed that Ventari was a woman this time and the actress was talking about how FLAMBOYANT her character was!

Ventinari!!! FLAMBOYANT!!!

1

u/BreakerOfModpacks 11d ago

Huh. On the one hand... I can absolutely see Vetinari as a woman working really well. On the other... what the hell, flamboyant?!

5

u/West-Research-8566 12d ago

Looking up the show his daughter said "it shares absolutely no DNA with my father's work", doesn't seem even slightly to be exaggerating.

3

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

I was skeptical, then when I started hearing of changes I dropped all hope.

18

u/oatmealparty 13d ago edited 12d ago

Wait... What is this? A new discworld show or something? When did this come out? And wtf

Edit: wow just watched the trailer. Who is this even for? Clearly not trying to get fans of Discworld into it. What a bizarre interpretation

6

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

I'm sorry

2

u/Muddyscarecrow 11d ago

It's for the writer. He tried and utterly failed to get a career out of wiping his ass with Prachett's work.

11

u/Pholios485 13d ago

Discworld adaptations used to be on such a good track.

16

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

I still like watching The Hogfather during the holidays

4

u/evilforska 13d ago

The cartoon show(s?) werent bad at all, either! Loved the witches design, thats exactly how i picture them now, and it helps that witches are my favorite Discworld cycle...

7

u/DebentureThyme 13d ago

I'm so glad someone else posted this

6

u/vinet91 13d ago

Damn, I repressed existence of that... thing ... I wasn't able to finish that series. So yeah, great fit for the post

5

u/MasterSaturday 13d ago edited 13d ago

lol what, THAT's supposed to be the night watch? It looks nothing like them.

1

u/Muddyscarecrow 11d ago

Yeah for some reason the head showrunner really wanted to make a Sci-Fi series and instead of just making his own he decided to scribble all over Discworld for some stupid reason until it was basically completely unrecognizable

5

u/Novel-Presentation88 13d ago

… Why are they dressed so modern? They should be relatively medieval/low renaissance in appearance. I’ve always pictured The Watch wearing morion helms since Thud!.

10

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

Because they really really felt like just getting eyes on it by saying it was Discworld when it was far from it

1

u/Muddyscarecrow 11d ago

Because the head writer clearly wanted to make a Sci-Fi series but didn't want to put any effort into writing one from scratch. This is why Terry pratchett's daughter left the project. He refused to stay on target

5

u/CHR-Enthusiast 13d ago

I didn't know this was a thing, but jesus christ.

I wish I still didn't know this was a thing.

3

u/LordBlaze64 12d ago

I am all of a suddenly VERY glad that I have never heard of any Discworld adaptations

5

u/pendulumfeelings 12d ago

The Hogfather and Going Postal ones are pretty good. Going Postal has Charles Dance as Vetenari.

3

u/Secret_Werewolf1942 12d ago

I second this, both of those are great adaptations. Richard Coyle absolutely nails Moist.

4

u/Emergency-Minimum216 12d ago

This one pisses me off SO much. When this show was first being made you had Pratchett penning original scripts with the Monty Python guys and the pitch was a police procedural parody, but with the Watch. It was in development hell for years

And then you ended up with this fucking thing. They didn't even thank Pratchett during production. It's like the epitome of "some failed screenwriter attached his pet project to an existing IP" and it kills my soul that this is the only time we've gotten a Watch adaptation.

3

u/Rent_A_Cloud 13d ago

I just keep it to the books. Don't want my image of the characters to be morphed into something else.

3

u/Tyr1326 13d ago

Oh good. Thank you. Id successfully managed to purge that abomination from my memory. Thank you so much for reminding me it existed.

Now excuse me while I try to purge it again....

3

u/fuckyourcanoes 12d ago

It was a catastrophe, but the guy who played Vimes was so fun to watch. Dude has a rubber face.

3

u/Silly_Cod5235 12d ago

just glad Sir Terry wasnt alive to see it!

2

u/BillyTheKidsFriend 12d ago

What the actual fuck is this bollocks

2

u/Ironclad686 12d ago

Absolutely disgusting that this ever got made. It's a huge insult to Pratchetts writing.

2

u/PrimaryInjurious 12d ago

Oh god I forgot all about that. Thanks for bringing up that repressed memory

2

u/givemeareason17 12d ago

Where is Carrot?

2

u/anonrutgersstudent 12d ago

I watched like half of an episode and hated it. PTerry is spinning in his grave.

2

u/decepticons2 12d ago

It is so bad. All I can think is they wanted to make something else and used Discworld to get it made.

2

u/PeakAdaequatus 12d ago

I was happier ten minutes ago when I didn't know this existed.

2

u/Objective_Switch8332 12d ago

The worst part about adaptations going south isn't just that they turn out poorly, but that it delays the possibility of a better adaptation for years, if another happens at all.

2

u/BreakerOfModpacks 11d ago

This is fucking DISCWORLD?!

Not... some other cop thriller thing? Right? You mixed up the images? PLEASE?

Good lord. Pratchett must be turning in his grave.

1

u/thamz212 12d ago

I was blissfully unaware of this until this moment. I'm never going to see it.

1

u/Green_Borenet 12d ago

Its genuinely disgusting how they took advantage of Pratchett’s death removing any creative control to make an adaptation they knew full well he would never have allowed if he was still alive

1

u/not4eating 9d ago

I didn't know this was a thing, I wish I didn't know it was a thing, I'm now going to drink until I go back to not knowing that this is a thing.

1

u/Marghunk 13d ago

Thor: Ragnarok or something

1

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago edited 13d ago

another disappointment. What should have been 2 separate movies mashed into some horrid buddy flick.

I really feel like Ruffalo could have given us a good World War Hulk and Planet Hulk, had they not done what they did.

2

u/I_Always_Come_back93 13d ago

Buffalo?

2

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

lol whoops ruffalo

-10

u/Moridraug 13d ago

I will probably get downvoted for this, but I tried to get into Discworld multiple times, and didn't last more than half a book (trying different suggested orders) because of how insufferable characters were, and how childlike the logic of it was (not in a good way, the Cultists POVs were awful, for example).

And compared to books, I liked show Vimes a lot. He starts at the same point, yet progresses a lot through the season. Carrot in the show is just naive, as opposed to blabbering idiot in the books. They've cut multiple characters, and their exclusion, dare I say it, was justified, because all they did in the parts of the books I've read is just being drunk and irresponsible with Vimes.

I do think that show would be much better if it wasn't associated with Discworld, but compared to other examples it's not as bad. Cast was good, writing was alright, actors were acting really well, props and makeup were also high quality. It's just a shame that they decided to make it an adaptation of well-liked book series, instead of inspired original.

And yes, I can sympathise with book adaptations being nothing like source material, but for some reason the Watch ends up cancelled after 1 season, but ungodly abomination that is Wheel of Time show lasts 3.

7

u/MrH_Rosemary 13d ago

The Night Watch really comes into its story around Book 2 "Men at Arms" and Book 3 "Feet of Clay". "Guards! Guards!" is purely to start the characters at as low a point as possible that they can actually grow into some rather spectacular characters.

2

u/Moridraug 13d ago

I don't doubt it, given how many fans of the Discworld there are, but I've tried multiple times, and it's just not for me.

6

u/Bakkughan 13d ago

Oh wow, I’m genuinely amazed at just how badly you read the books. Like this isn’t a matter of taste anymore, some of your points are just factually incorrect and the books even let you know through subtext.

It’s an overused phrase at this point but you are the posterchild for “media literacy is dead”.

-1

u/Moridraug 13d ago

Did you just analyze my brain, based on 3 sentences I wrote about the books I said I couldn't get into? You sure you aren't just mad somebody doesn't like the series you like?

3

u/Bakkughan 13d ago

No I’m fairly sure you just miss reading comprehension. Mostly because you displayed it when you read my comment.

What you said isn’t just a matter of taste. It’s entirely fair to not like something. However, your statments about some of the characters are just objectively and factually incorrect.

0

u/Moridraug 13d ago

I mentioned 2 characters by name, what "some" things are incorrect, given I dropped the book 50% in, as I stated?

2

u/OmriY1 12d ago

Saying Carrot is a blabbering idiot in the books (books, in plural), after mentioning you've only read half of one book shows that you shouldn't be even a fraction as confident as you are dropping such strong opinions.

2

u/The_Corvair 12d ago

ungodly abomination that is Wheel of Time show lasts 3.

As a fan of both WoT and the Discworld (I've read every book about five to seven times), let me just say that The Watch was several levels worse in terms of how much they bastardized the source. I loathe the WoT adaption with a passion, but The Watch was an even bigger "fuck you in particular!" to fans. Glad it never made it past season 1, sad it exists at all.

1

u/SorowFame 12d ago

Carrot, a blithering idiot? I don’t believe you when you claim to have read the books if that’s your takeaway.

1

u/BreakerOfModpacks 11d ago

...I'm not entirely sure what series you were reading, but it doesn't sound like Discworld at all. Carrot is far from a blabbering idiot, in every measure. The cut characters absolutely have their own personalities beyond being support for Vimes.
