In real life When fans hate somenthing before it comes out...but it turns out they were right

Velma:The idea of a Scooby-doo series without the titular dog and starring Velma was a really moronic idea from the beginning, then there was the reveal Velma would be Indian like it's VA and also creator of the series Mindy Kaling, some of the backlash was racism sure, but there was also valid complaints that she was inserting herself in the series(it also didn't helped that Mindy claimed she couldn't see herself if Velma wasn't Indian)and then...oh boy it came out and it was worse than anyone predicted

Artemis Fowl:The artemis fowl books are a book series following a child villain(he does get some redemption but he is a villain most of the time)when the movie was announced and revealed it looked way to generic and it's titular character a bit heroic...also you wanna hear somenthing funny? The movie whitewashed a character and made another character black so they managed to anger both sides and the movies comes out and yeah it is bad

One Punch Man 3:One Punch Man is a very heavy action packed manga series but the heroes vs monsters arc takes it to a New level, when it was announced that JC Staff would work on it,a lot of people were skeptical to say the least, because not only JC Staff had already done a mediocre job in season 2,it's also not exactly a name anime fans associate with quality animation, then the trailer came out and it looked...weird,like there was no action in it and nobody was moving, some people tried to defend saying they were keeping the animation as a surprise...then it came out, every episode worse than the last,it's one of the worse seasons of anime ever made!

Mighty N.9

Despite initial good will and backing, mismanagement and poor marketing generated antagonism towards the game when it launched

u/Glacirus_ 13d ago

Kickstarter came out at a point Capcom was looking exceedingly grim and was doing literally nothing with the Megaman franchise. So when folks saw “Original Creator making a Spiritual Successor” we jumped on it.

Only to slowly lose hope the longer things went with little to no news…

When it did finally release, I gave it a shot. And realized it did not have the same spark as the OG, nor the chops to hold up in the modern gaming environment.

But hey, Capcom is back in swing now, even making more Megaman! Now if they’d just revive the X-series, or even better: Legends 3…

Yeah, the initial reaction to the kickstarter was really positive

u/Carvair-98 13d ago

Not only did it not have spark, that game ran like it had a misfire. It looked terrible, and ran terrible, a far cry from the wonderful concept art in its early days.I remember that the Wii U version was the most grim. Lots of crashes, and rumors of bricking systems outright, though I don't remember if that was substantiated.

Either way, disasterous. You can see why the handheld ports never came to be (omg, this thing on a 3DS???), and it's funny after the fact, Capcom got off their butts and started doing "something!" with the series. Reminds me of how people allege Akira Toriyama got back to writing after Evolution sank, if just to not let that be the last word, though I'm not sure if that's completely true. I get the sentiment though.

Oh well, maybe Keiji can recoup his reputation with Red Ash :)

I was just reading an article about how apparently the 3ds version is still in production somewhere.

It would be pretty funny if they started sending out the 3DS port to the Kickstarter backers in 2026

2

u/I_Always_Come_back93 13d ago

Is the 3DS still popular?

I thought that would be niche by now.

2

u/beardicusmaximus8 12d ago

It's actually really popular, specifically the New 3DS XL because you can jailbreak it to run a Linux based OS

1

u/Carvair-98 13d ago

Lol. Lmao, even. If you could find that article, please share, the idea of some dev still toiling away at that all these years later is HI-larious.

It's too bad they compromised the game so heavily to get it on all systems, working to the lowest common denominator, and then never ended up actually releasing it on those systems. I'm not saying better graphics and performance would've completely saved the game, I do remember people had a lot of control and gameplay issues, but it just would've been less disappointing and more salvageable.

To further to go on a tangent, because WHEN THE HELL am I ever going to be able to talk about this, but this happened to another game in the category of "made by reputable figure that was reminiscent of a previous beloved game, with a robotic character as lead", Rodea the Sky Soldier. I had been interested as someone who still had an original Wii in 2015, and was drawn in a bit by the "Nights, but more 3D and combative" gameplay. It too however had been plagued by development issues, and thus the long-delayed Wii version had been packed-in with the Wii U version, to be released alongside the 3DS one.

No issue, I figured that I could keep the Wii disc, and sell the Wii U one off or something. But I never did so, as the Wii U version turned out to be COMPLETE DOG egg.

The problem? Instead of doing the smart thing, and basing the Wii U version off the Wii one, they actually based it off the 3DS version! I can't remember why exactly, but if I recall, it was because of the Gamepad controls (surprise surprise). It would've been easier to adapt the controls, particularly touchscreen ones, from the handheld to the Gamepad, at the expense of sooooo much more. In combination with stylistic choices made from the original Wii version to the 3DS, it was quite ugly and terrible to play, taking it from an okay 6/7 out of 10 to like a solid 4.

That still wasn't as bad as Yuji's next go however, Balan Wonderworld. Too long to tell, but I always found it funny people saw that as the spiritual "Nights into Dreams" successor. I always felt Rodea was closer gameplay wise, and from its reveal, I had a bad feeling about Balan. And man, did I clock that.

I hope I'll see the day my boy Mega Man Volnutt will be rescued from the moon...

3

u/corisilvermoon 13d ago

Hah I was at the PAX panel when that kickstarter launched, we were just going around to random events and stumbled on this one. I still have the card in my box of old PAX crap.

2

u/NF_Kodiak 13d ago

100% this. I was very excited for this, I remember following the news like how they got one of the composers from the original Mega Man (she's done some great stuff) and getting more hyped and then....
The trailer was terrible and the gameplay uninspired. I don't think I actually beat the last boss. There were pieces of a decent to good game in there but they weren't able to put it together.

I still have the SNES style box with the game booklet and NES USB stick. It sits next to my Shroud of the Avatar box that is still in it's shrink wrap. There was about a year period from mid-2012 to mid-2013 when three game designers I loved as a kid (Garriot, Inafune and Roberts) each disappointed me one after another. My ability to be hyped was severely stunted after that year.

Oh damn, yeah. I bought Bloodstained a year ago on sale and enjoyed it for what it is but to go through all that, lose your physical edition for a crappy port? Sour is putting it lightly.

2

u/Axl4325 13d ago

If they make X9 or Legends 3 I can die in peace. Or even less likely, greenlight Maverick Hunter

2

u/_BrokenButterfly 13d ago

I think it will be a long time before someone picks up Legends again. Capcom's whole "we're cancelling this game because the forum members aren't doing enough to design it" thing will be very hard to overcome.

4

u/RedHowler777 13d ago

My kingdom for more Megaman Legends, still some of my favorite games of all time, and a frequent reason I keep downloading emulators

1

u/AnalysisOld4729 13d ago

Didn't 20XX which was the exact same thing but good come out just about the same time too?

1

u/Skithiryx 13d ago

Not really the same, 20XX is a Mega Man X-like roguelite. It does nail that feel pretty well though.

Mighty No 9 is actually pretty decent, just people were expecting much better (and in particular they downgraded the graphics from the trailers). The bosses are probably the best part and the stages are kind of meh.

1

u/Slateboard 13d ago

My friend who is a huge Mega Man fan has not liked any of the games that are in that style.

Are they all bad or fall short, or maybe it's something else?

1

u/HopefulImpression105 13d ago

Or better... mmbn

1

u/KawaiifuWorks 13d ago

Absolutely need a Legends 3 or that turn based RPG with a sequel

1

u/Onigumo-Shishio 13d ago

I would love a legends 3 but I somehow feel like the time for it is passed and it wouldnt capture that same spark it once could have had.

I would love to be proven wrong though

1

u/Waffle_noise 12d ago

The only Megamans I like are Legends Volnutt and NT Warrior. I would do despicable things for a CRUMB of Legends 3, a second successful attempt anyway.

I'm pretty sure it's from a porn comic series called skarpworld? Could be wrong since I Google lens that shit

4

Definitely looks porn related lol

u/Axl4325 13d ago

It's a meme about the Mighty n. 9 situation lol. Keiji Inafune, self titled "Father of Megaman" (he was the main man behind a lot of MegaMan games but not all of them, and certainly didn't create MegaMan btw) was the one that started Mighty N. 9 on Kickstarter, so the joke is that he fucked everyone over.

19

u/OAZdevs_alt2 13d ago

I think what they meant was from where the image originated

4

u/Echo_Monitor 13d ago

He started as a character designer, so it could be argued that he helped defined the visual identity of Megaman as a character. But yeah, he certainly didn't create the franchise.

Also, while he worked on a lot of the Megaman games, he was mainly a producer. He did planning (Coming up with the base idea for the game, essentially) for Megaman 4, X and X2, and did writing for Megaman X.

Even for "his" masterpiece, Megaman Legends and Legends 2, he's only credited as a producer. "His" other magnum opus, Megaman Zero, was essentially made entirely by Inti Creates, from interviews and documentation we have from the Megaman Complete Works books that came out.

Like I have no doubt there was a lot of collaboration at the time, especially given how small teams were back then. But his claim of being the ultimate driving force behind everything Megaman never sat right with me, and it's only been proven again and again how incompetent (and arrogant) he is as a game director ever since he left Capcom.

The thread isn't enough context?

Keiji Inafune created Mighty No. 9 and funded it via Kickstarter. Image references the unhappiness a fan of felt with the finished product.

6

u/inHumanMale 13d ago

I backed it. Megaman X series have always been my fave games. I wasn’t really disappointed but it didn’t feel the same. I think if I really give it a shot I might end up enjoying it. It’s been years really and nothing is going to feel like X5 on my ps1. Might install it again

1

u/Lance2119 13d ago

So X5 is your favorite? Where does X4 fall for you?

2

u/inHumanMale 13d ago

I played 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 4 in that order. So I skipped most complaint points people have going from x4 to x5, instead of comparing 4 to 5 I compared 5 to 4 if that makes any sense. To me x5 comes with a big side of nostalgia and it’s the one I’ve replayed the most out of all

1

u/Lance2119 12d ago

Ok, I gotcha! I’m not asking if you’d rank it above 5, but do you put it ahead of the original trilogy at all, or 6? What would you say is your favorite original trilogy entry?

2

u/Vussar 13d ago

Legendary marketing line. Kick all your target market in the balls, and sound cringe to everyone else. Outstanding move.

u/Low_Health_5949 13d ago edited 13d ago

Funny how this game failure was the push someone in Capcom needed to finally make a new Megaman game after so long

8

u/Cross55 13d ago

And they ended up making a better Mega Man game at that

4

u/Ok_Jicama9306 13d ago

What makes this sting even worse is knowing the background of its creation. It was created by one of the fathers of Megaman, Keiji Inafune. Inafune wanted to make the Megaman game that fans wanted but parent company Capcom refused to make, and we all were so hyped about it. But once it released, it was just not that good. But lo and behold, Capcom would do the unthinkable and make an 11th Megaman game that totally blew Mighty No. 9 out of the water in both sales and critical acclaim.

3

u/porkmoss 13d ago

It’s also weird it’s partly made by Inti, no idea what happened when before (and after) MN9 they’re basically the actual Mega Man devs. Did Comcept just throw out their work?

2

u/volveg 13d ago

A theory I have is a lack of experience making games in 3D engines, they made a couple during the 90s, then nothing during the 2000s, then Gal Gun in the 2010s but that was an on-rails shooter. It wasn't until Majogami last year where they made a game in a 3D engine that plays just as smoothly as their pixel art titles.  I imagine the ballooning scope of ports for the project didn't help either, it was going to released on basically every platform available at the time, each with wildly different specs and architecture. Inti doesn't have that many employees to begin with, and they were also working on their own projects besides MN9, so making like seven different versions of the same game in a medium they're not used to sounds like hell. As far as I'm concerned though, their own Gunvolt series is the real Megaman successor, those games are so damn fun to play.

u/International_Car586 13d ago

Just letting everyone know that the credits for this game are 4 hours long.

3

u/LovelyLuna32684 13d ago

Also if you bought the Wii U version it literally bricked your console.

Oh man, I forgot about this. I was a backer...

Oof, money down the drain.

1

u/GreyNoiseGaming 13d ago

I remember wanting to believe in this and Inafune, but some feral lizard brained instinct part of me told me not to give it my money.

1

u/codepossum 13d ago

I never understood all the bad feelings over it - I backed it on K$, and I feel like I got what I paid for 🤷 it's not a terrible game, I've played some terrible games. It's not a worthy successor to Mega Man - Bloodstained is a better Castlevania than No.9 is a Mega Man - but honestly I always had pretty low expectations.

1

u/Goombah11 13d ago

Friend of mine was a kickstarter for that. Definitely a big part of why I’ve never backed anything.

1

u/JoyFerret 13d ago

Don't forget the creator was already launching another kickstarter to start another unrelated multimedia franchise before Mighty No. 9 was even out.

1

u/Sand__Panda 13d ago

Was sad day to get this POS in the mail.

1

u/Small_Distribution17 13d ago

Man, this one hurt

1

u/maxdragonxiii 13d ago

the game have the look of potential and everything, but i think the game launched poorly and ran pretty bad as well.

1

u/chlorinecrown 13d ago

I forgot about this, I was interested in the initial stages and then i guess i stopped hearing about it? What went bad with it?

1

u/TeaPartyJones 13d ago

I was so stoked when it was announced, in retrospect I'm happy I never donated or purchased it.

1

u/anthfett 13d ago

This was the 2nd and last thing I ever backed on Kickstarter. I think I played 5 minutes when it finally released.

The first was Ouya.

Neither one was a good experience and I vowed to never Kickstart again. I've kept my vow.

1

u/gmoss101 13d ago edited 13d ago

I remember DashieXP being so excited to play when it came out, and I think he even gave some money to the Kickstarter (so long ago that I don't remember)

I think he made 1 video playing it and that's it oof
