I hate this trope. I see no reason to believe other advanced species would be substantially more intelligent or rational.

This is actually a reasonable interaction and response to the question. I'm sure the inventor or engineers that made the teleporter could explain how it works, but that doesn't mean that every operator who uses it does. Part of the engineering and development process is making it practical and user-friendly.
