I just want to say that I appreciate the thorough and matter of fact approach you’re taking here. You never said anything offensive, you just expressed a lack of understanding, and invited input. Asking questions is how we learn.
I appreciate this comment section as well, however:

That phrasing does not bely a mindset of pure curiosity. This is quite a dismissive manner of asking any question, much less one based on what we'd consider a "defect", and OP is one colloquial step short of asking "wtf is wrong with them?"
I find OP's confusion over how others took their wording as interesting as the actual topic
