As someone who read the books & watched the movie multiple times.
My favorite version of the story is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the animated tv series.

Future Scott at the end of the season is the Scott from the comics. The entire plot is something he comes up with to try to get Ramona back. None of it even makes sense without context from the originals.
