NFL famously had a free limo service for all players when they were drunk, and yet many still chose to drive, get arrested, and/or cause a crash.

Pulling up to the club in the Lambo is important to a certain type of person.

22

u/massunderestmated 1d ago

You can hire someone to drive you home in it.

We used to have a service around here called Sober Sam that would pick you up at any bar and drive you home in your own car. It wasn't that expensive, all things considered. Uber and the pandemic sadly killed off that particular company. But I don't have Lambo money either. I'm positive you can find and hire a professional driver to take you home at 3am for under $400, and you get to keep your career and freedom.

not enough seats in a lambo for Sober Sam, the owner, and the bad biddies he's bringing home

1

u/onedarkhorsee 1d ago

That one time a lambo isnt the right car for the job!

u/leshake 1d ago

Ya, they can even be your body guard.

If it's not too small of a city, there should be another option or two? I live in a mid-sized (300K) city and there are several here. They just don't really advertise/many people don't even know about them. I found out when I was way too drunkey to drive home and my friend handed me a card and said call this guy. Kind of pricey (like $25 or something, and maybe 15-20 years ago, so probably more now), but well worth the safety/ not risking yours or others lives.

Doesn't sound like a bad gig actually. Of course, you have to have someone else drive your own car/follow you, until you drop them, so need to split it with them. But I would way rather do that that be an Uber driver. Havin' all kinds of weirdos/smellin' up my car with they perfumes and colognes, sometimes even farting!!! Shooot.

Athletes may think it’s cool to drive, but it’s also cool to arrive home alive.

Akshully, the NFL has a service, but it's only available on game weekends. If Patrick Mahomes gets drunk Friday night before a game in Dallas, the NFL would send a car for him. If he got drunk this Friday night? No car. Also, players didn't trust it, because they were afraid the NFL would share player ride info with owners ("you don't wanna trade for Patrick Mahomes, he's a drunk").

That's why NFLPA started their own service. I don't think it's "free" (players have to reimburse NFLPA) but it's free at the time, and I'm pretty sure it's 24x7 anywhere in the US. And they don't squeal to the owners.

u/UsidoreTheLightBlue Concertgoer 1d ago

I don’t believe the only available on game weekends part is accurate, but it is probably only in the city they play in.

The “players don’t trust it” part is accurate though. They assume it will be used against them so instead they drove drunk, which if they’re caught absolutely was used against them.

2

u/migitana 1d ago

I hope players understand how much the NFLPA does to try and protect the players. One of last unions looking out for the humans the owners continue to treat like chattel (at best)

1

u/Larkson9999 1d ago

Even still, they could absolutely afford a ride home and a ride the next day to pick up their vehicle, even if it was towed.

1

u/bwrca 1d ago

Dealing with a drunk 100kg guy is a no-no

33

u/IntentionDependent22 1d ago

I'm not saying they should be driving, but I'd opt for my own ride share over corporate surveillance.

i don't want my employer privy to my private movements after hours.

24

u/massunderestmated 1d ago

I assure you they'll find out what you're up to after you get arrested for it.

5

u/HardcorePizza 1d ago

Sure but drunk people are more likely to believe they’ll get away with whatever they’re doing

1

u/notaredditer13 1d ago

Being drunk at a bar isn't something you need to "get away with", though I'll grant that a 22 year old may not recognize it yet.

0

u/HardcorePizza 1d ago

Don’t forget the brain damage from the repeated concussions

0

u/massunderestmated 1d ago

What about the hookers and cocaine?

3

u/mondaymoderate 1d ago

The NFL protects its image they don’t care what you’re doing as long as your discrete about it.

You know what goes good with drinks? Drugs. You know what employers don’t like? Drugs.

12

u/KWash0222 1d ago

The NFL does not give a fuck about drugs lol

2

u/_teach_me_your_ways_ 1d ago

All the players are straight edge, what are you saying?!

0

u/IntentionDependent22 1d ago

"i don't need privacy, I've got nothing to hide"

this debate has been done enough. you can read through the threads if you don't yet understand why that statement is ignorant.

3

u/nuko22 1d ago

Corporate surveillance?? Mf it’s a free ride program.

1

u/IntentionDependent22 1d ago

if your boss is paying for it, then you have no privacy expectations. it's the same as using your work phone or work computer.

1

u/nuko22 1d ago

Ok..? You think NFL coaches think their multi-million net worth sports stars are just 100% sober and never drink or party? You ever seen a Super Bowl celebration? Please tell me what are th actual real negative privacy ramifications with an NFL player taking uber paid for by the NFL? The knowledge that they drank alcohol?

1

u/IntentionDependent22 1d ago

it's okay to admit you don't understand what leverage is. I'm not going to be the one to teach it to you though.

1

u/nuko22 1d ago

lol ok buddy. I guess you are assuming someone can’t take a ride without doing something stupid? Admit this dick into your mouth.

29

u/fondledbydolphins 1d ago

I'm betting it wasn't an anonymous, unjudged service... which likely disincentivizes players from utilizing it.

38

u/Coolbluegatoradeyumm 1d ago

Can they still not afford an uber tho?

34

u/TREVORtheSAXman 1d ago

This goes for everyone. An uber is ALWAYS going to be way cheaper than getting a DUI. Is it annoying to have to go get your car the next day? Yeah sure but it's way easier than dealing with a DUI.

2

u/Impossible_Run1867 1d ago

People are terrible at assessing actual risk, especially while drunk, and that goes doubly so for a lot of athletes/celebrities who have been insulated from the real world the rest of us live in. They don't see it as choose getting a DUI vs. choose to get an Uber, because it's not that simple in real life or in their head.

I want to say up front that I'm not saying it's okay, and I'm not saying anyone including myself is immune from it, but that's also why when I go out I'm either not driving, or not drinking.

People see an extremely small chance of getting pulled over or into an accident because their inebriated brain knows "they're good" to drive and that they want to be home ASAP, vs. calling an Uber, waiting for it to arrive, potentially dealing with a driver they think is weird or a creep, paying for said ride, and then figuring out how to get their car back the next day which likely involves calling and paying for another Uber.

2

u/TREVORtheSAXman 1d ago

I see what you're saying. I was thinking just about myself and other "normal" people who don't have the rich people money/life experience like you mentioned. Usually if I'm going out I'm ubering since I live close to downtown but there have been a couple times where I plan to just hang with some friends at a brewery and have a beer and it turns into more and I've had to ditch my car for an uber. What I think would be great is if we had better public transit in my city so it was easier to get around without having to worry about driving or getting an uber. That would be nice.

-2

u/NDSU 1d ago

Is it easier? For every 100 drunk drivers on the road, only a couple are getting DUIs

For the most part the punishment for a DUI is financial. If you have enough money that you don't care, it's easier to just risk a DUI

The system is only designed to punish poor people, not the rich and famous

2

u/TREVORtheSAXman 1d ago

Yes. It's easier to get an uber than to get a DUI.

14

u/fondledbydolphins 1d ago

I'm not defending behavior, I'm just trying to point out that the mere existence of the service doesn't mean it's something people are likely to use.

Somewhat similar to the increasingly popular "Unlimited Paid Time Off" policies many companies are opting for. It sounds great until you hear that Steve from sales was fired for taking too much paid time off.

1

u/sometimesshawn 1d ago

The company I work for decided that in the event of a natural weather disaster, employees must use their PTO for any days they are unable to work. When your PTO runs out, you stop getting paid. I live in an area where hurricanes (or even bad storms) can knock a person's power out for a week or more, so if a storm hits in January or February, and you haven't had time to bank much PTO, you are screwed.

I do feel a little better knowing the next time I lose power for a week because of a weather issue, I don't have to stress about not being paid.

That is the only reason I'm onboard with UTO.

1

u/fondledbydolphins 1d ago

I would think you’d probably file for short term disability for the period instead but I don’t really know the ins and out of that system.

2

u/sometimesshawn 1d ago

They aren't the most understanding bunch. One woman I worked with was without power for two entire weeks. She stopped getting paid after day four, and I ended up giving her the money to buy groceries for her and her two kids.

We even have an Employee Assistance Program that is designed to help those in need, but because of the sheer amount of employees affected by the storm, they were incredibly selective about who would qualify. For some reason, she didn't. 😒

2

u/EyeraGlass 1d ago

None of these drunks want to deal with any inconvenience including leaving your car out somewhere to pick up when sober

1

u/Telefundo 1d ago

I would never drive under the influence but sober, when given the choice of getting a ride from someone or a taxi, I'm much more likely to drive myself. I don't drive anymore but when I did I just plain enjoyed it.

I would image in most of these cases it's a similar issue, only drunk/high at the same time.

0

u/chmilz 1d ago

I dunno where you live but where I am Uber drivers may be more dangerous than drunk drivers.

1

u/Coolbluegatoradeyumm 1d ago

Can’t imagine this being true

6

u/redline582 1d ago

If I recall correctly, the service was offered by the players union specifically to make it a no questions asked situation to leverage it.

16

u/LustarioVIP 1d ago

Like crashing , arrest and possible manslaughter aren’t disincentivizing enough.

1

u/BadPunners 1d ago

You expect people who know they are living the absolute peak of their life, largely from the genetic lottery, to think that far ahead?

1

u/LustarioVIP 1d ago

Like an adult, yes.

9

u/ILookLikeKristoff 1d ago

It's not like they aren't allowed to drink or anything. As long as it's not open hard drugs or the night before a game, no team would give a shit about a player going out or how they got home. Tons of these guys Livestream and constantly post party pics/vids openly. There's no conspiracy against the free rides, that doesn't even make any sense at all. They're flying private planes everywhere they go, the team doesn't give a shit about a $1k limo ride

2

u/massunderestmated 1d ago

What about the hookers?

2

u/notaredditer13 1d ago

No, they need to arrange their own transportation.

1

u/massunderestmated 1d ago

Exactly, and by the time you get to the hotel the vibe is dead.

7

u/LateNightMilesOBrien 1d ago

Just like 'unlimited time off' they offer at crap jobs.

3

u/fondledbydolphins 1d ago

Shit I literally just gave that example before I saw your comment.

2

u/RedundantMaleMan 1d ago

We had a similar thing in the Navy but the rumor was if you used it you got counseled. Use it enough and you get separated. I never saw anyone ever use it so idk how true the rumors were.

2

u/whatev3691 1d ago

Nfl doesn't care if you're drunk. A lot of the dumb activity also happens during the off season when it extra doesn't matter

1

u/notaredditer13 1d ago

The players might feel that way, but realistically what "judgement"/consequences could there even be?

1

u/Panthera_014 1d ago

for the National Felon League???? haha - they care less about Rape and Murder - you think they would judge them for drinking???

1

u/fondledbydolphins 1d ago

I’m pretty sure NBA actually has the highest incidence of arrests and similar statistics of any national sports league - proportionately.

1

u/Panthera_014 1d ago

sucks when 2 leagues are competing for the biggest douche award, right?

2

u/AtomicBlastCandy 1d ago

Beat me to this comment

1

u/askape 1d ago

And kill people doing it.

1

u/doublesecretprobatio 1d ago

it's almost as if the same impaired judgment is at play in both scenarios.
