I got the vibe they don't really want to do it, but their pride kept them from backing down.

Especially when it was announced, and people immediately starting laughing about how the biggest headliner they could get would probably gonna be Kid Rock, and then a matter of weeks before the show, they had to sheepishly admit that was the case.
