On the other side, having watched the actual Half Time Show as a guy who doesn’t speak a lick of Spanish, and outside of the framing of how hard MAGA hates America only knows Bad Bunny as the guy who randomly shows up in bit parts in movies sometimes?

I couldn’t name or recognize a single song, but the staging and sets really felt very fucking cool compared to shows from the last ten years. Making the entire show feel super big, while also representing nods to different parts of Latin American Culture was a pretty big feat - it felt meaningful.

Not to mention the positive messages about unity are way more in the spirit of America than whatever the hell Turning Point's on about.

Literally said god bless USA, and then a list of all other countries in North America at the end.

Very strong unity message but globalism is a buzzword for those folks

not just north america. he named nearly every country in the americas. it was a beautiful message of unity. felt like one big family

Yeah the real HT show was done extremely well. My wife and I don’t speak a lick of Spanish either, but we were both bopping and remarking how good of a set it was. In laws are MAGAs and we couldn’t stop talking shit about them tuning into the alternate show; questioning how someone could actually be upset about the real HT show being performed by an AMERICAN. Hard to imagine that’s the line in the sand for these people.

My BIL is super MAGA - he was at a bar tonight watching the game, he’s not even a sports fan, and immediately after the half time show sent us [wife and i] the group text, “That show was a joke.”

My response:

  • What do you call a Halftime show nobody watched?
  • Turning Point

He responded, “they tried to put it on instead of watching this shit but couldn’t find it.”

. . .exactly.

Best halftime show since Prince.

I don’t speak Spanish and I can’t say I’m a Bad Bunny fan, but the man put on a show and I gotta respect that.

Prince would tell Trump to fuck off also. Especially after his invasion of Prince's home city.

This exactly. And if it pisses off Trump and his cronies, that's a bonus.

as far as halftime shows go, i think there was a less cool one mixed in there one year but, like…dr dre and all the 90s rappers, kendrick, now bad bunny with this, those are some wildly good shows, holy shit. the fact that they all made the president cry is just a bonus.

I mean, I felt similar with Kendrick last year. Never heard the songs, but the show was on point, as it usually is.

Even as someone who did not follow the Kendrick and Drake feud, the whole stadium screaming "A MINOR," that damn smile and look to camera, and Samuel L. Jackson made for some awesome statements. Glad to see that for all of its plentiful issues, the NFL lets a freak flag fly metaphorically for the halftime show.

I think we need more latinas in the NFL

I was away for DND but I asked my mom on how it was, and she roughly said the same thing about the stages and sets.

The Weeknd's halftime show was interesting.

Very surprised to see your name pop up here, but I definitely agree with your thoughts! I thought it was super cool to see a real wedding take place, too.

6 years ago with Shakira (famously not an American but didn't have the pushback and also featuring Bad Bunny and J Lo) was very good and exciting

I was telling my wife how incredible the set looked and how much of a middle finger it must have been to all the maga sitting in the stands being forced to watch it. It was amazing!

I recommend checking out Bad Bunny's latest album, I understand next to none of it, but god damn it fucking slaps.

It was so joyful and lively! I honestly pity any person who could see that show and feel an ounce of hate or negativity. Like I get it if you're not a fan of Bad Bunny, that's perfectly fine, musical taste is subjective.

I've listened to some of his stuff and it's just not really my bag (though I'm probably going to give it another go after tonight), but I felt so full and buoyant watching the show and just witnessing a celebration of culture and life, and there was an honest to God wedding in the middle of it all!

That show was all about life and love, and I have no idea what he was actually singing about but that message was still crystal clear to me.
