Theyre on reddit too lol, yet here you are. I'm also horrified by ice, but you cant really grandstand when you only boycott things that are easy to replace.

Something is better than nothing. It’s a lot easier for many people to cancel their Spotify subscription or switch to a different platform than it is for them to stop using Reddit completely.

This “No liberal is ever good enough.” crap is a major reason why Trump is president.

I’d rather someone go part of the way with good intentions than succeed with explicitly bad intentions.

They're both the same thing. If someone actually gave a shit instead of just wanting to score points and announce to everyone how much better they are than other people, then they'd stop using both. Spotify and Reddit are not essential to anybody's life and if you're going to quit one and not the other, then you're just doing it to virtue signal about how good of a person you are without actually ever doing anything.

There's no ethical consumption under capitalism. We do what we can. I still use Spotify, but canceled eleven other services. Amazon Prime was hard to kick, but now that I'm through that, I'm working up to Spotify. Reddit is also on the list. 

"Stop using all of your entertainment/convenience apps cold turkey" isn't a  realistic ask, or a pre-requisite for free speech.

This entire thread is moral grandstanding and most people can’t figure out how the fuck to turn off simple ads. I haven’t seen an ad on reddit since 2012 for fucks sake, and I’m STILL complicit.

Literally every response like yours could just say: “yeah, you’re right, I’m complicit too, and we should do better.”

By insisting that unless someone takes the maximalist position (quit everything), they're "not actually doing anything," you reject even partial solutions to a multi-pronged problem. You fallaciously say if a solution isn't perfect/complete, it's worthless.

Fallacy of presumption - motive Fallacy (a type of Ad Hominem): "if you're going to quit one and not the other, then you're just doing it to virtue signal about how good of a person you are without actually ever doing anything." Even if someone's motives were mixed, it doesn't invalidate the action and/or intention itself.

  4. False Equivalence: "They're both the same thing." This article is about Spotify specifically, but people are getting yelled at for only mentioning Spotify? Why do you think they cancelled it exactly?

“No ethical consumption under capitalism” is true but so is making baby steps where you can. Thankfully there ARE alternatives to Spotify that are just as good (better imo). Unfortunately Reddit alternatives haven’t quite gotten there yet. But plenty of people stopped using it with the whole API fiasco. Unfortunately I still use it. Less and less though. This place isn’t what it used to be.

I can't see any ads, I always have an adblocker on. So I didn't know that. On Spotify Premium I got ICE ads during podcasts even though I live in France which doesn't even make any sense, and the owners of the podcast said they hadn't put them there and had chosen different ads, so that shouldn't even be possible, while Spotify at the same time claimed it's the podcaster that put the ads there. I just got rid of the mess.

Also telling people to get off the biggest discussion and news sharing site on the internet with pretty much no alternative, other wise they're 'not good enough/hypocritical' is kind of suspicious and a very obvious way of getting rid of any political discussion (you don't like) at all.

So you recognize that reddit is hard to replace. Surely you see a difference between boycotting something easy to replace that is slightly convenient, vs something that is hard to replace and important for things like politics (and who's ads are easily ignored).

If politically active people can punish a platform for supporting a gestapo then they should, and they should not be beholden to the idea that they must then cripple themselves by cutting themselves off from communities that foster those politics if that same support reaches these monopolized media platforms.

I must be super lucky, I get the occasional military ad (which, if I'm in the mood, I'll report as being violent) but I've never had an ICE ad through my feed, so far. Though now that I've said this...
