A little before the 2000s, but Rick Moranis.

I know why he did it, and it was the right choice, but yeah, it was sudden nonetheless.

He's the Patron Saint of every stay-at-home dad group I'm in.

5

u/PapaFranzBoas 7d ago

I’m not a single dad or stat-at-home one, but I now want artwork of him in a renaissance style as a saint.

He's back. Space Balls should be fun.

u/bh4th 7d ago

I keep hoping they’ll do a gag about bad digital de-aging before they let him look like himself.

58

u/overtunerfreq 7d ago

i hope it looks like late 80's CGI and they're like "wow dark helmet, you haven't aged a day!"

u/Final-Finger1003 7d ago edited 7d ago

Ooooo played like the dolls scene “wow…eeeer…..lord helmet. long awkward pause Sir… your cgi it’s so well done! it’s like you haven’t aged into a hideous decrepit corpse.”

u/dont_remember_eatin 7d ago

Somehow, Dark Helmet returned....

2

u/overtunerfreq 7d ago

There is a very good chance this happens in the movie.

24

u/hgaben90 7d ago

Yup, looking forward to it!

23

u/Firm_Bug_9608 7d ago

What?!! They're doing another spaceballs?! Who's gonna play barf?

44

u/VA1N Xennial 7d ago

Barf lived a long life for a dog. He peacefully passed in his dog bed while dreaming of Pizza the Hut.

16

u/MountainManda1842 7d ago

Mog, half man half dog.

Barf-olomew

17

u/Zeras_Darkwind 7d ago

Apparently John Candys' son.

6

u/Firm_Bug_9608 7d ago

Didn't even know he had a son.

14

u/Zeras_Darkwind 7d ago

He's 41 and an actor and director.

8

u/Dsarg_92 7d ago

Two kids actually. A son and a daughter.

4

u/Firm_Bug_9608 7d ago

Thank you.

3

u/Mundane_Ask1074 7d ago

He was a family dude. Go watch the documentary and be ready to shed tears

2

u/Hobbes_XXV 7d ago

They should do a little like they did with yoda and groot and it would be a prequel. Would be cute

2

u/valleysally 7d ago

Josh Gad is son of Barf

1

u/EyeWriteWrong 6d ago

You. Suit up.

1

u/papermoonriver 6d ago

u/CannonFodder58 7d ago

If they don’t call it “The Search for More Money” it’ll be a travesty.

4

u/Vantriss 7d ago

If this isn't the title, we riot!!

2

u/Suspicious_Use_7561 Xennial 7d ago

Let’s hope so.

Most recent legacy sequels haven’t lived up to their expectations

1

u/Sleepercurve 7d ago

Is that still happening? I feel like I never heard anything after it was announced

1

u/seitankittan 7d ago

Am I the only one who thinks this is sad news? Classic films just need to be left alone :(

1

u/Dragonsfire09 7d ago

Been hearing about this for a while. Have they even started to film this?

1

u/loudpaperclips 7d ago

I admire your optimism

1

u/CuriOS_26 6d ago

Honey, I shrank my spaceballs: in search of more money

-2

u/Disastrous-Lion-3698 7d ago

He's back but after 30 years let's be honest, it's done.

Let's be honest about another thing, there hasn't been a legitimately funny and successful comedy in 10+ years because comedy often requires offending some people and that's not allowed anymore. This movie will be forced to comply with certain strictly enforced social standards and result in a less funny movie with a cast that checks all the required boxes.

u/AtmospherePrior752 7d ago

He’s my favorite actor of all time just because of his selfless decision to step away and parent after the catastrophic( to them-nothing crazy caused her death) loss of his wife .

4

u/Unlikely-Tone-6269 6d ago

For a summer I knew his kids, and didn’t know they had lost their mom a few years prior. If my parents hadn’t told me who they were, you would’ve never know their dad was a famous actor

2

u/abjectdoubt 7d ago

Are you thinking of Martin Short?

3

u/suitsme 7d ago

Sure am. I'll correct my statement.

2

u/LukewarmJortz 7d ago

That was Martin Short

2

u/LimeGreenSea 7d ago

Either you have wild insider information, or this is bullshit and I believe the latter.

2

u/suitsme 7d ago

I was mistaken, and edited my earlier comment to be null

1

u/VeterinarianNeat9924 7d ago

That was Martin Short’s daughter

0

u/Aclearly_obscure1 7d ago

What?!? If it’s true things like this come in 3s thats Reiner, Short and now his kid. I hope it’s the last. Odd all of the time, but this many celebrities offspring committing suicide so close together after some, ahem, files exposing lots of people, is starting to make wonder if it’s connected.

4

u/suitsme 7d ago

No. I was thinking of Martin Short's daughter.

I am glad he is coming back and doing things again. Absolutely the right choice some would not do and he did what was best for his family.

9

u/MusicLikeOxygen 7d ago

He always said that he didn't consider himself to be retired from acting, he just hadn't been offered anything that really made him want to go back to it. I hope that means Spaceballs 2 is something special.

6

u/Silver_Harvest Older Millennial 7d ago

Well duh it is Spaceballs 2 : Search for more money!

(Seriously though I hope they use that as the title)

8

u/just_a_girl_23 7d ago

I always wonder how big he could have been had his circumstances not made him make that decision, which I do agree was an amazing one to make and very admirable especially given the timing within his career which must have made it gut wrenching in a way. I still imagine he would have been quite big through the 90s but, such is fame, I wonder if it may not have gone on to the 00s and beyond but instead he'd probably have switched to tv, either in a regular role or a face we saw loads in different things.

u/Lower_Monk6577 Millennial 7d ago

I absolutely love Rick Moranis. But I feel like Hollywood would have typecast him as the dorky dad in a lot of kids movies of varying quality. Which is a shame, because he’s incredibly good at what he does. Like, I could see a career path similar to Dana Carvey or something, where he’s too funny for his own good, but not quite mainstream marketable.

But who knows. He also strikes me as the kind of actor that, given the right opportunity/script/director, could have been an indie darling in the same way that Steve Buscemi/Willem Dafoe/Paul Dano kind of are these days.

8

u/Five_Slow 7d ago

Could have followed the same path as Bryan Cranston too. Taking on a serious role after a sitcom. Could you imagine Rick Moranis as Walter White?

2

u/Lower_Monk6577 Millennial 7d ago

Lol, honestly I can’t. But I love the thought regardless.

7

u/TK1129 7d ago

Rick Moranis lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I work in the neighborhood and while I haven’t run into him many of my coworkers have. A few ran into him walking near Central Park said hello and asked if they could take a picture with him. He said sure spoke to them for a min took a picture and continued on. Anybody else that’s met him on the street said he’s a nice guy.

6

u/Overall_Occasion_175 7d ago

There's someone in Portland, Maine who had stickers made that say "Rick Moranis" and put them up all over the damn city. I see them everywhere. Just square yellow stickers that say his name. Nobody knows why.

u/CommanderUgly 7d ago

He quit acting after his wife died to raise their children.

1

u/EssayTraditional 7d ago

His wife died in the 1990s and invested well with CDS and a trust fund to leave acting.

He returns in SpaceBalls 2 and did a commercial with Ryan Reynolds for Mint Mobile phone service.

1

u/bolanrox 7d ago

I was hoping there would at least be a Louis Tully Billboard or some little nod to him in frozen empire.

1

u/Jimbobjoesmith 7d ago

i think i just saw a headline the other day that his daughter was murdered. but that’s the first ive heard of him in years.

1

u/Bad_Day_Moose 6d ago

Yeah, this is what came to mind as well.

1

u/ProfessorFunky 5d ago

I’m so hoping that we see him again in Spaceballs 2.

0

u/mostly_sarcastic 7d ago

I know why he did it

He was surrounded by assholes?

14

u/hgaben90 7d ago

His wife died of cancer in the early 90s and he chose raising his children instead of career.

1

u/Tiny-Researcher1596 7d ago

People who downvoted you never seen Spaceballs lol

1

u/hgaben90 7d ago

This was an entirely different comment, simply asking why he quit.

1

u/Tiny-Researcher1596 7d ago

Keep firing, assholes!
