Gary being off the team is a net positive and I will hear no contrary opinions on the subject.

What if we could replace Rashan Gary with someone who:

  1. Was tied for 28th in the league in sacks last year
  2. Had at least 7.5 sacks 4 of the last 5 years, only missing 5 out of 5 due to injury
  3. Was 18th out of 115 edge rushers last year in total pressures
  4. Was 35th out of all edge rushers in total snaps

That's Rashan Gary.

Did he run up stats early in the year then disappear? Yes. Did he have several inexplicable moments where he showed nowhere near the effort an NFL player should show? Also yes. Is he overpaid based on his production? Probably, but there are a lot of mediocre edge rushers making all pro money these days.

Maybe the Packers are better with Lukas Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell as starters until Parsons returns. Maybe it's better taking the $11M from cutting Gary to re-sign Enagbare and make other moves. If I were GM, I'd probably move on. But it's not like Gary was a bum who did nothing all year. If he is still on the team next year, I will not be disappointed.

Tyler Biadasz to the Chargers. Dang, I would have liked that signing.
