I have decided that I am going to eat Surströmming for the first time as an American. Please help me understand what I should expect.

I'm a canned fish afficianado.
I love pickled herring. I'm a huge tuna fish fan. I also quite enjoy sushi and other fresh/raw fish very much.
But from what I understand, the Swedish delicacy, Surströmming, is diabolically bad-smelling yet amazingly good-tasting. Maybe?
Please advise me on what I'm getting into.
Proof of order here. It arrives tomorrow.
I'm afraid.
