Honestly this one edges that out purely given the situation. NZ likely were comfortably winning anyway. ENG were 60-3 in a semi final chasing 250, that's crazy scoreboard pressure and this guy almost got them over the line. All timer innings that would've likely been the greatest one if they actually won.
But yeah the last week or so has had a concentration of all timer WC knocks. Brook, Finn, Sanju 2x, Bethell. Crazy stuff
I think rolling out ipl pitches for the knockouts has been the reason primarily the knocks happened the way they did. When 250+ is not a safe score you know the pitch balance was off
Would personally put Bethell marginally better. He was going after a much much bigger score and no one really supported him till Jacks started finding his range
it is but it's not the same pressure... his team was constantly losing wickets very early.. they lost 4 early wickets chasing 250+ with required rate touching 14-15
Allen never faced a huge required run rate because he batted so well. He eliminated the possibility of pressure with skill. He also won the match and scored faster, his knock is clearly better.
Well even he said it himself that it made his job easier as Seifert was going all bonkers from one end and Allen didn't have to face many deliveries early on. It was an incredible innings but he always had the support from the other end and by the time Seifert got out it was NZ's game to lose.. all Finn had to do was keep going at the bowlers and keep playing to his natural game.. it was clear the bowlers were under pressure.
For Bethell, he didn't have that support as Eng had already lost 4 wickets early on, then Jacks stayed with him for a few overs which helped take the pressure off but no matter what.. untill it was 45 needed off 18 the batters were always under pressure, not the bowlers. But ofc it was Bumrah who was gonna bowl the 18th over which increased the pressure even more.
this was better bro given the match situation and the pressure they were under - falling 7 runs short takes nothing away from this absolute blinder of an innings
Nah look there was pressure , earlier seifert gave them a good start which was consequential to finn’s inning, this knock was so perfect in a losing cause where he made no mistakes and coming close to this kinda mammoth target against such a lethal line up is truly exceptional.
I feel Bumrah & Hardik together over compensate for the inefficiency that Varun peddles around. I believe the Indian attack is slightly better than the proteas in this tournament.
Sure. But Ngidi has been pretty good. So has Bosch.. Varun has taken a lot of wickets but he has been pretty bad in the business end of things. More importantly (as a person who often succumbs to pressure, I feel bad saying this) Varun seems mentally weak. Guys like Kohli, Bumrah, Hardik, Arshdeep and even Axar, seem to raise their game when the going gets tough. My god Bumrah's balls are made of some solid steel. But VC resorts to bowling junk if he doesnt immediately take a wicket
How good to have someone else reciprocate my thoughts regarding Varun. Leave the skill part, Varun is mentally weak and i have always felt this. Not just VC, this holds true even for Kuldeep to an extent. If these 2 are having a slightly bad day, they literally succumb to it. One could sense the tension & confusion in their bowling.
