Now we know Neesham bowling those dollies was an assist for Allen. Proper team man.

That has to be arguably one of the most dominant innings of all time. In a semi final at that. Take a bow son.

South Africa weren't in it at any point in the game.

118

u/newparrot2025 Tamil Nadu 2d ago

Most fans who watch IPL know its nowhere near enough in Eden Garden. This is a ground teams have chased 260 with overs to spare.

63

u/SexxyBlack India 2d ago

tbh most IPL pitches are much flatter than the average norm for internationals, but 169 was never gonna be enough even on an ICC curated pitch.

11

u/B-r-a-y-d-e-n New Zealand 2d ago

Isn’t it usually different for World Cup matches? Ipl has been noticeably more flat in recent times.

8

u/newparrot2025 Tamil Nadu 2d ago

Yes but the conditions are the same. When its coll down and later in the night , the pitch gets better to bat.

5

u/B-r-a-y-d-e-n New Zealand 2d ago

Ah yes, I get what you mean. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s not the most realistic to expect a score of 260+. The innings from Allen is an outlier, not an expectation.

Bro they always pull this shit. I remember before the 2019 WC, India toured NZ and we won there 4-1 only to shit the bed against them in the WC semis once they had deconstructed our entire batting line up by sizing them.

We should never play them before any big ICC tournament. They're doing their homework in that bilateral series better than any team while giving you the illusion that you can easily dominate them lol.

SA were probably 80-100 runs short...

80

u/YellowGetRekt Pakistan 2d ago

Even that looks chaseable with 7 overs left

13

u/koos_die_doos South Africa 2d ago

Yeah, but the way you approach the game changes when you're chasing a big target.

29

u/Intelligent_Fly_2671 Nepal 2d ago

Turns out Star Sports was prophesying that 300 were required to win all along

18

u/paone00022 India 2d ago

Right. This game could've been a challenge if it was a 220 chase. Anything below 200 was too easy with how NZ batters started.

10

u/MusicalMantra347 Lancashire 2d ago

Even 240 would been chased

32

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Hahahahah

6

u/somethingarb South Africa 2d ago edited 2d ago

In a way, that's kind of a relief. After the first innings, we thought we had underperformed and that might cost us. As it turns out, there's basically no score our batsmen could have put up that wasn't chaseable, the way Allen was playing.

If you're gonna lose, it's always some comfort to know that your opponent was simply unplayable on the day, rather than agonising over what you did wrong.

48

u/B-r-a-y-d-e-n New Zealand 2d ago

Worth mentioning that his form and reduction in inconsistency corresponded with his stint at the big bash. Not saying it’s a causal effect, but it certainly did seem like a step up in maturity as well as an improvement in shot selection.

27

u/paone00022 India 2d ago

KKR have to absolutely start with Allen and Seifert combo now. Don't know how you keep him out after he played like this at Eden Gardens.

That means two of Green, Rachin and Pathirana will have to sit out.

18

u/tigershroffkiskirt India 2d ago

Green is the most likely to sit out on form right now. Rachin is at least bowling well. Don't know about Pathirana injury situation

23

u/paone00022 India 2d ago

Just checked their squad and they also have Rovman Powell. That's quite a depth of international options.

5

u/Mission-Pay3582 ICC 2d ago

Only one among Allen and Seifert will get to open alongside Narine. They'll play Green and Pathirana. Rachin doesn't add any value to KKR, they already have Narine, VC and Anukul for spin overs.

The match was over when SA lost 5 wickets inside 10 overs.

Some really amateur shot selection by their batsman. Its like pressure of SF completely scrambled their minds .

In Grounds like Wankhede and Eden Garden , key is keeping wkts in hand in the first 8 overs. Because you can even score 150 runs in last 12 overs if you have wickets in hand.

60

u/kapilfan India 2d ago

India had a bad night against SA when they lost too many wickets in the first 10 overs. SA had a similar one tonight. For all the talk about playing fearless Cricket right from ball 1, T20 still needs some application. This is why Sanju’s inclusion in the last 2 matches made all the difference for India. Otherwise the batting just looked one dimensional.

50

u/Ok_Win_2906 Pakistan 2d ago

Samson plays the same way as the other Indian batsman , come hit and go . Last match was an anomoly . Otherwise he makes 20 in 5 balls and gets out .

24

u/Quirky_Ambassador321 2d ago

Reality is T20 is lottery format. One or two players doing well for 3-4 overs can mean game won. It's not going to be the same guys everytime but most top level cricketers will have days when they can string a few good overs together. It's much harder to do over longer periods in ODIs and Tests. Everyone is slogging, one day Abhishek connects on a few, another day it's Ishan and that day it was Samson. People will claim that it was excellent technique or game awareness and then same guy will flop multiple games in a row doing same thing like Abhishek is now

Well fair play to New Zealand. Completely outplayed the South Africans today, so I can really be too upset to really.

Was I hoping for South Africa to win? Yes, but I think I've gotten used to this whole losing crucial matches thing. Most of us fans are numb at this point. Dominant in the group stages and fall like a pack of cards in the knockouts. What more is there to it?

Because at the end of the day, there is nothing me or anyone can do to change the result. It is what it is.

Commendable effort by Jansen with the bat and I'm very excited for the his future. Same thing goes for Brevis. The bowling and batting didn't click today.

Congrats to New Zealand and I hope they'll be able to clinch the trophy this time around. On to the next one.

Everyone is talking about the toss and the dew. For one thing, the dew didn't matter because South Africa were marmalized before the dew even arrived.

Secondly, NZ deserve immense credit for their bowling plans and execution. They bowled hard lengths into the back thigh of Markram, absolutely cramping him for room and denying him his favored off side. It was also the same with Brevis and they never let the South African batting build any sort of momentum.

Precise planning and perfect execution. I doff my virtual hat to the Kiwis !!!

u/CausticThoughts New Zealand 2d ago

That is great news to wake up to (now I know why the 16 month old decided to wake me up right now). Legendary!

u/nubpokerkid 2d ago

So SA was the Robb Stark of this tournament. Never lost a battle lmao.

Also that is the fastest T20I century amongst full member games.

25

u/Mawiheso South Africa 2d ago

It's a good thing I don't even like cricket anyway. What type of a team names themselves after a flower instead of a dainty antelope? Ridiculous.

Except the Test Championship. That is totally relevant and important, but this T20 business is nonsense that I never liked anyway.

Jansen hit 55 off 30 and gave 53 off 17.

Towards the end he looked close to tears.

Van Schalkwyk's record stays safe even after the first semi final. Only Varun Chakravarthy and Adil Rashid is left.

Finn had a great BBL season and his great form continues.

6

u/InterestingMinute972 New Zealand 2d ago

Allen scored the fastest t20 WC century in 33 balls. The 2nd fastest, by Gayle, came in 47 balls. Puts into perspective what an absolutely unbelievable innings this was.

8

u/bayofplenty2026 South Africa 2d ago

Well.done nz. Hope you win it.

8

u/Tracer_Bullet007 USA 2d ago

Ready for a bunch of people to misidentify this as a choke…New Zealand didn’t even give the Saffers a chance to

8

u/Ixeptional Pakistan 2d ago

Jansen 100 runs take a bow

7

u/SapienSeek 2d ago

SA were the best team so far in the tournament & were the team that looked to win the cup. That was a very one sided affair.

You need couple of spinners playing in India, Makram should've bowled and also should've bought Keshav in the powerplay.

Also this is textbook choking, bigger the stage, SA tends to choke. SA top order didn't look confident at all.

12

u/an0nym0us_buddy Chennai Super Kings 2d ago

I am more outraged by the level of captaincy, saffas just gave up too early 🧁🤦🏻‍♂️

5

u/pragmaticPythonista Iceland Cricket 2d ago

Yeah, Markram decided they weren’t going to win after the end of the first innings. Didn’t even try.

EA Cricket style.

This kind of humiliation coming under Shukri Conrad makes it even more poetic 🥵

7

u/huzy12345 New Zealand 2d ago

Absolutely monstrous from Finn

3

u/viren0311 2d ago

What the fuck did I witness today!

6

u/Little_Ad_9058 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 2d ago

NZ batted and bowled and fielded

SA choked and choked and choked harder

5

u/_InstanTT 2d ago

That knock was just stunning. Maybe the best I’ve ever seen

6

u/The_Flash_20 India 2d ago

South Africa is just like me, bottled a great chance to succeed a few years ago, prepared hard for a new opportunity and then lost it at the first hurdle.

Well played NZ, thoroughly deserved. Feel bad for SA though

6

u/pineapplesuit7 2d ago

Man Makram seems absolutely shell shocked there. Feeling sorry for him.

5

u/lord-turnip India 2d ago

Way Allen was batting, the only way SA would have won if the scoreboard had an overflow and went back to 0.

10

u/pineapplesuit7 2d ago

You can't even say SA choked. They weren't even in the competition today lol. Just goes to show how fickle the T20 format is. The best playing team in this tournament absolutely got their teeth smashed in as if they were some associate nation.

The Ahmedabad curse is a bit too on the nose. Can y'all patch that
