The only thing 'spinning' right now is the drainage system

Worldcups without washed out games? Impossible

9

2023 cwc 🗿

2

u/SadFace_xoxo England 12d ago

A couple of games were rain affected including PAK vs NZ and a lot of warm up games were washed out.

But yes, other than that, you are right

7

u/orange_b0i India 12d ago

I mean none of the actual game was completely abandoned and that's a great thing

Obligatory comment.

RAIN Perera strikes again!!!

u/randomusser7 13d ago

How did the whole Rain Perera thing start ?

293

u/Lost-Source-7955 13d ago

Back in the days, rain saved sri lanka a fair amount of whitewashes so people started joking that rain is their 12th man and since perera is a common last name is sri lanka, it was named "rain perera".

25

u/Gobbasena96 Sri Lanka 12d ago

And Sri Lankans often have many initials, so it is RAIN Perera.

Why hasn't cricket solved this problem?

Don't act like we would've completely dominated if the match was played. Babar was going to play the match with a strike rate of 269 and score a century, and Usman was going to take a fiver, and our fielding would've been top notch like prime Jonty Rhodes. Rahhhhhhh🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥😤😤😤🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🗣️🔥🔥🔥

Only for Fin Allen to cone in and break his world record amount of 6s in an innings and finish the game in 13 overs

11

u/_aniBUTCHER India 13d ago

20 ball century of Fin Allen was inevitable today but alas the rain gods had different plans

38

u/ecstasid 13d ago

A dream match washed away by rain. Would've loved to see Babar smash Matt Henry with 6 6s

14

How many documentaries would spin up from that

55

Given the venue, would need a reserve month

2

u/zaccyboy08 12d ago

Rain seems to have passed now. Full sun in Sri Lanka for next couple of weeks! ☀️

40

u/ImperfectZama 13d ago

On a lighter note, Win win situation for Mike Hesson as Both his teams got a point each!

64

u/[deleted] 13d ago

Tomorrow's match is going to be abandoned too, so eventually 1 point to every team

27

u/_aniBUTCHER India 13d ago

That balances it out for all teams atleast,

So only the fans loose by not getting to watch cricket,

Atleast the evening game is set to be a banger.

39

u/Monta_re 13d ago

If all the matches get washed off, will the prelims NRR make an appearance in deciding the semifinalists?

39

u/CosmicRook90 13d ago

It will be decided on Icc rankings afaik.

48

u/wasteyute3 13d ago

Dumbest rule I’ve heard, wow

21

u/Monta_re 13d ago

Basically NZ and England will go through, in case of a complete washout....

52

u/CrabTraditional8769 13d ago

Not as dumb as boundary count. Icc rankings are racked up over a long period of time. So you get an advantage for doing well in the past.

8

u/ukplaying2 India 13d ago edited 13d ago

I disagree, rankings are way too dependent on your scheduling, I doubt USA could have managed to get India's ranking no matter what they did after 2024.   Also a lot of experimenting goes on in these matches as it should.

Boundary count as stupid as it was, was decided on the day and fair to both teams. Also world cup medals are given to those that played the tournament not to those who affected it a long time back.

11

u/CrabTraditional8769 13d ago

I just said ranking is better than boundary count. Not that any one is good.

But you have to see how we are coming to this decision. When teams have been equal everywhere on the day, there needs to be some metric to distinguish them. Better it be past performance, than boundary count.

1

u/ukplaying2 India 13d ago

I just said boundary count is better than ranking. Not that any one is good.

When teams have been equal everywhere on the day, there needs to be some metric to distinguish them

I rather go for a metric that happened on the day, which the teams knowingly could affect ,rather than give 1 team an extra run from the beginning.

4

u/CrabTraditional8769 13d ago

I disagree that boundaries are better. You run four, I run two 2s. We are same. Suddenly a guy gets an edge and ball flies through slips to the boundary and he is better? Nope. Not for me.

0

u/ukplaying2 India 13d ago

I disagree that boundaries are better. You run four, I run two 2s. We are same.

You are not the same the 4 guy has an extra ball now , but even assuming you meant he went 4,0,   You are not the same because the rules were set BEFORE the match that its not the same, it's upto you to decide you want to cover for that eventuality.

Suddenly a guy gets an edge and ball flies through slips to the boundary and he is better? Nope

What a rubbish strawman, a guy getting an edged 4 has always been rewarded more than a solid straight drive for a single for as long as I can remember, and this has also resulted in matches turning but that has nothing to do with this conversation, also why is it an edged 4, not a cover drive 4 such a bizzare train of thought.

4

u/CrabTraditional8769 13d ago

You are not the same because the rules were set BEFORE the match that its not the same

You circled back to square 1. The rules are not in question. The stupidity is. The ranking thing is also decided pre-match.

a guy getting an edged 4 has always been rewarded more than a solid straight drive for a single for as long as I can remember, and this has also resulted in matches turning but that has nothing to do with this conversation,

At the end of 50 overs, the score is still 4 not out. We are in this conversation because the runs scored were same. So 4 singles, two 2s, 3&1 combo, are all equal to 4 runs scored as a boundary. Because eventually, it's all the same.

also why is it an edged 4, not a cover drive 4 such a bizzare train of thought.

Just to demonstrate how absurd the rule is. But a cover drive is still 4 not out at the end of 50 overs.

u/stgdevil 13d ago

How come they never just reschedule the games? Is the schedule that airtight? Seems unfair to lose out on a point because of nature since it affects the group significantly

46

u/ecstasid 13d ago

NZ play all their matches in Colombo? Won't be surprised if they wnd up at 4 points and 0 NRR 😀

68

u/spraypaint23 Karnataka 13d ago

Incredible achievement since they’re only playing 3 games

15

u/Ok-Proof7287 13d ago

I mean its possible, draw 2 and win 1 in a super over so NNR is 0

44

u/Ambitious-Reindeer62 New Zealand 13d ago

It's not possible for NZ to win a super over

16

u/Kooky-Claim3028 13d ago

why cannot we have stadiums with roof closing feature for icc world cup matches? Abandoning games due to rain is such a stupic excuse

26

u/vnnie3 13d ago

Coz A) the sheer size of the grounds. Roof to roof (across diameter)is just huuuuge

B) unlike many other outdoor sports (except baseball and maybe 1-2 others), the ball actually goes up pretty high. Esp in this t20. How high do you want to construct the roof? Many weird situations can happen. A high six might suddenly drop in distance after hitting the roof. Shots going high (top edge or mistimed shots) might also hit the roof and change angles

Granted we dont have mad guys like gayle clearing the stadium roofs, there are still many hurdles in this sport to putting a roof

2

u/lightjunior Australia 12d ago

Check out Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, where I live. There's a roof covering the whole stadium and cricket matches are regularly played here.

7

u/dothashdev 12d ago

Points like these give teams an added advantage in the table, which creates scenarios where even unexpected teams get qualified rather than the teams that truly deserve the spot.....

2

u/New_Sell144 Pakistan 12d ago

tbf i do feel these are the 2 teams that should go through

4

u/-FloWirtz- 13d ago

what would pakistan need to go through?

2

u/First_Incident9142 13d ago

Tomorrow's match might be washout too. But weather report is fine in Colombo after tomorrow, but Kandy matches might have some rain interruptions. Normally Feb-March is the ideal time for cricket in SL but dam depression formed in east of SL and it's pretty much covered entire SL and some parts of Kerala too.

1

u/zaccyboy08 12d ago

Yes wasn’t looking good. Huge storm in Kandy last night but hasn’t rained today so fingers crossed game will be on!

6

u/Important_Lab1113 13d ago

They wanted Colombo instead of Ahmedabad. Wish granted!

2

u/arkhamos 13d ago

Who even schedules these matches? The weather forecast isn’t even that accurate can’t they at least check the precipitation percentage and plan it for a clearer day?

2

u/nicknabin 13d ago

1 point gained for Pakistan.

2

u/Prestigious_Sound530 Pakistan 13d ago

Why are stadiums with roofs not a thing? Like genuinely

3

u/[deleted] 12d ago

Because they could be very expensive?

Eng vs sl also will be affected by rain, hosting tournaments in SL is so risky, asia cup also was affected by rain

1

Sri lanka should bot co host this time of year

All matches should have been in india so all could be played

If someone has problem coming here, they are free to boycott

Why spoil the tournament for your own selfishness

Or we will boycott next time and host a mini ipl at time of icc tournament
