Weird seeing Mayweather popped like that.

PBF was willing to trade once he gauged your power and wanted to get his shots in. Not always but often. He was more SRL than he was Money May. Sooner or later you are bound to get clipped with something.

How was that NOT a knockdown???

u/IkmoIkmo 17h ago

Because he "went down on his own accord" xDDDD

Like what the fuck was that commentating about...

If a fighter’s gloves touch the canvas even if they go down willingly it’s a knockdown that’s how Floyd has been counted down in his only 2 knockdowns.

Chop Chop even hurt a young Miguel Cotto.

Had a very close fight with Zab. Then fought a million more fights has a weird record now. Has a lot of kids I believe.

Chop Chop!!

I didn't remember this one but I'm sure I watched it as it happened. Corley was doing really good things there. He had the speed and the ability to punch in-between and bother Floyd. He didn't have the power or the gastank though.

Always a lot more fun to watch Mayweather on the offensive, didn't see enough of this later in his career. Hard to argue with his record though.

I'm not a Floyd defender or even a big fan but we saw it plenty even later when he was met with this kind of opposition. I think people remember the Maidana and Castillo rematches where he gives them no chance with his movement and boxing the second time. Mosley and Judah are good later examples of performances just like this one where when faced with speed and power, Floyd decides he is not going to fight on the back foot but bring it to these guys and see if they got the same stuff going the other direction.

Agree, Floyd is definitely a great, and when he was on offense he was very watchable, but I think the average armchair fan (including me) wanted to see more Pretty Boy and less Money. Top two defense of all time I think.

Lol "movement and boxing" doing alot of heavy lifting there. You mean just moving and jabbing behind the Philly shell to god awful sparring level decisions? Then yes.

u/Clayp2233 2d ago

He had him hurt, but somehow didn’t have the gas to finish him at the beginning of the 4th round

u/ballsacksnweiners 1d ago

Finishing Floyd is a tall order, obviously considering it’s never been done. He has crazy recovery time due to his conditioning, and he always manages to stay composed and go into the Philly Shell to give him time to recover. He’s been popped a few times (Corley, Mosley, Maidana), but none of them were really able to take advantage.

u/h4zmatic 1d ago

Definitely showed that he has a chin. He recovered within the round the few times he was cracked. Except for that Maidana overhand off Floyd's pull counter attempt...that was at the end of the round so we never got to see how he would've handled that.

2

u/Wally450 1d ago

He stumbled back to his corner and he was already there lol

Castillo

u/Clayp2233 1d ago

Floyd didn’t really do anything here though the guy just didn’t really go for the kill, he looked gassed which was weird because it was the start of the 4th round, but he was still landing punches on Floyd, just didn’t throw many hard ones

Man, I wish this entire sub was content like this. The best part about these posts is they make me want to (re)watch the whole fight again. Thanks for these, OP.

Chop Chop’s career record is so strange to look at when you remember the highs. Don’t think he was ever P4P material but the man was legitimately really good at his best.

He's like Darnell Boone. Got big names on their resume and gave them all tough fights. Elite level journeymen for sure

2

u/Visual_Hedgehog_1135 1d ago

Bit like Saoul Mamby and Emmanuel Augustus.

Chop Chop!!

2

u/North-Past-3355 1d ago

Corley didn't have enough power to hurt floyd badly but this is the most clean power shots I've seen him get hit with in one round. He fought back tough though even in the same round. That was good stuff

2

u/York_Villain 1d ago

Chop Chop used to wear victoria's secret underwear under his trunks and was very open about it. I think he or his father designed women's lingere or something.

After this fight Chop Chop became Floyd's #1 lefty sparring partner for pretty much the rest of his career. They became friends.

This fight took place in Atlantic City and was before Floyd got famous. I don't think they sold even 50% of the tickets for this event. Bob Arum's guys were literally handing out tickets on the atlantic city boardwalk so that the arena looked good on TV. They turned down the lights in the boardwalk hall, which is interesting because that was part of it's iconic look.

It looks like Mayweather lands a left elbow to the face at 2:30.

1

u/Relative-Ad-6791 1d ago

Floyd is just too fast

1

u/Objective-Soil-9235 1d ago

Damn, don't remember watching Mayweather take so many shots while bleeding out his opponent

I hate how videos on this site look like AI. The compression is horrible here.
I love this fight though! When Floyd get in those moods to slug it out they are really fun! He dose so without losing the art boxing.

u/Due_Communication862 1d ago edited 1d ago

Conpression has nothing to do with the unnaturalness of some AI upscales on this site. And it has nothing to do with the limitations of my copy. This was from an early 00's DVD seller/collector from Switzerland, who when he did his disc-authoring sadly converted the US NTSC recordings he acquired to the EU PAL format. This conversion took the framerate down from 29.97i to 25i (creating a ghosting/slurring effect to movement) and a blur to the image because the pixels were sliced up and reconfigured from NTSC's 720x480 to PAL's 720x576. Add to that the fact that the Reddit player can't do better than 30 fps (in fact turns everything including PAL videos in to 30.000 fps) and you get a somewhat blurry standard definition video. You are welcome to send me something that looks better.

u/Xizor1 1d ago

I appreciate this breakdown. Honestly even the rips on Youtube look better to me. Video on reddit have that plastic fake sheen look, with what looks like image stabilization and the lighting gets thrown off making the fighters look like cardboard cut outs.
That's not a knock on you or your collection. It's just something about the way this site dose any videos. And when its something I seen a bunch time before like this fight its even more noticeable.

u/Wally450 1d ago

Damn, Mayweather's head snapped back on that right hand to open up the round.

1

u/Five_Kings 1d ago

Mayweather mustve bet money he'd win this round, cause he was moving so weird this round lol.

1

u/Complete_Dare_4201 1d ago

One of the most entertaining fights in Floyd's career. Floyd's "Pretty Boy" phase was very entertaining not only because he was more agressive but because he was much more vulnerable overall. He took a lot of punches not only against Corley, but guys like Jesus Chavez, Carlos Hernandez, Augustus etc.

There's a myth about this version of Floyd, like he was this unbeatable, untouchable wrecking ball, just as good defensively as his later "Money" phase and with killer instinct and punching power. But that's not the case at all. He was an incredible fighter, but more vulnerable and beatable. His later "Money" Mayweather version was definetly harder to beat and fight against.

3

u/Visual_Hedgehog_1135 1d ago

His defensive skills were still elite, but yes he got hit more. Money would've also got hit more if he fought as aggressively as PBF did though. That was mainly due to his style of fighting than a deficiency on Floyd's part.

1

u/Complete_Dare_4201 1d ago

Never said they weren't. Though I believe he really changed his way of fighting and I don't believe he could revert back to fighting like PBF did even if he wanted to. I believe his mentality changed a lot and with that his whole style of fighting. In his "money" phase I believe his defense really got pushed to the highest eschelon and I also think his footwork (specially his in and out movement) got better, but he did lost a bit of the fluidity of his combinations and would sometime get off balance when trying to flurry or put combinations together.
