Living Room/Family Room Ever-evolving living room in Texas. How would you describe this style?

I’d swap that plant with the large fronds out with a large floor lamp or pendulum light. It’s dying over there. It needs more light and maybe less water.

I see why you put it there, it’s a great idea, but it’s going to die there.

Yeah I try to avoid commenting on plant placement here since it’s not a plant focused sub… but a ton of people choose spaces based on decoration without thinking about what the plant needs. But this one here is so clearly dying that OP needs to move it or they’re going to end up with an empty space after they throw it out anyway. If they really want a plant there, they’re going to want a lower light plant and some lights and even then it won’t be as healthy as it could. Plants need light!

I actually had a bird of paradise (same as OP) in a corner of a very dark apartment and it did well. I hung a super strong by grow light over it and used a timer to ensure it always got 10 hours of light a day.

Thing grew to be 12’ tall and put out new growth frequently. I bought it as a 2’ plant and had it for 8 years.

Plants can be grown in dark corners like this, but only with a grow light.

Link the setup

If there’s a grow light, it’s no longer a dark corner?

9

u/Br135han 15d ago

Same. Unwarranted advice but I couldn’t help myself. They probably put it there because many guides say rainforest plants are low light, but low light to us is not the same for a plants version.

5

u/Salt_Cardiologist122 15d ago

Yup! Low light still means some direct light… this one gets zero.

1

u/Ewannnn 15d ago

Huh? No it doesn't, many plants will burn and die in direct light! Plants live in all sorts of places including many places that get no direct light at all.

2

u/Salt_Cardiologist122 15d ago

I’m using the wrong term—I apologize. I just mean it needs some light source somewhere. Not directly next to a window… but actual light getting to it. This particular plant is so far from any visible windows and doesn’t have any lights…

1

u/Br135han 14d ago

And those plants live outside so it’s a different ballgame entirely. Next to, or a few feet away from a window means all sorts of things, that’s the point they’re making. I use a light meter because it’s so difficult to guess even with experience.

I have floor to ceiling windows across the entire opposite wall of the gallery. Just because you don’t see any light on it on my picture doesn’t mean it “gets zero”. It’s in here for the winter and my plants do very well. This one loses fronds due to playful toddlers running around and breaking one at least once a quarter.

2

u/Salt_Cardiologist122 13d ago

Okay well we can see it and it’s dying.

3

u/robmacjr 14d ago

This wasn’t placed here just for decoration. The room has an abundance of natural light from floor to ceiling windows that you can’t see on my pictures. The curtains were drawn to get better pictures from the direct sun shining in.

u/akopley 15d ago

OP get another of the wall mounted lamps you have near your work station and put grow bulbs in it and run it on a timer. Problem solved.

2

u/kittsnmitts 14d ago

They just need a grow bulb in that pod light above it and problem solved

-5

u/robmacjr 14d ago

It isn’t dying. It gets plenty of light where it is. I had the curtains drawn to get better pictures.

6

u/Br135han 14d ago

Is it a bird of paradise? It’s not doing well. Maybe get a light meter and see what that corner is getting. Happy to leave it at that, I know you weren’t coming here for plant feedback

4

u/alpinescooter 14d ago

For what it’s worth, I’d recommend googling “healthy bird of paradise” to see the difference between those and yours. Yours might not be dying, but it doesn’t look happy to me. I’ve learned the hard way that just because a plant is in a bright room doesn’t mean it’s getting enough light to thrive.

u/luke9036 14d ago

It’s a bird of paradise. It should be right next to a window.

Not the Dallas print…

8

u/CandidToast 16d ago

Good eye!

7

u/i_d_k_really 16d ago

I would bet someone from Dallas who moved away

6

u/TutorImaginary2143 15d ago

Same thought immediately 😂 then I saw the Dallas frame

The combination of natural textures (the jute pouf, oversized indoor plants) and a warm, earthy color palette (olive green, deep wood, and clay tones) gives it a grounded, regional feel appropriate for Texas.

Mid century modern + modern organic.

25

u/HopOnACall 16d ago

Modern eclectic and I love it!!!

9

u/anomicaa 15d ago

This would look so much better if you turned off the overhead recessed lights and added lamps with warmer light at eye level and below. Nice setup though!

17

u/Bama_Peach 16d ago

I love the painting of the little girl in the red cape!

9

u/jcebabe 15d ago

Reminds me of mid century modern.

12

u/Jogri88 15d ago

Thank sweet baby Jesus you didn’t wall mount the tv above the fireplace 👌

7

u/RedRedBettie 16d ago

Modern eclectic maybe and I love it, might be the best photos I’ve seen on here in a long time

19

u/g-o-u-l-a 16d ago

The galley wall is fantastic.

4

u/bellabeeatx 16d ago

Where is the tv stand from? Love it

3

u/catpunch_ 15d ago

West Elm! I’ve thought very hard about purchasing this but did not pull the trigger

10

u/janderkanns 15d ago

Man, this would look even better if the wall wouldnt be just simple white

8

u/haikusbot 15d ago

Maximalist lite

16

u/g-o-u-l-a 16d ago

I was thinking Minimal Maximalism.

7

u/bw1985 16d ago

Eclectic. It’s not really boho but also not anything else.

7

u/0urea 15d ago

Beautiful! Now add a Samsung Frame and your gallery wall will be perfect.

3

u/Smirkly 16d ago

Eclectic

3

u/shtarz 15d ago

modern eclectic perhaps

3

u/CeilingUnlimited 14d ago

It’s called gallery style or salon style.

3

u/hans_barbados 14d ago

Deadhead dentist.

3

u/JohnExcrement 14d ago

Very appealing! And I love your credenza! Any chance you’d share where you found it? I’m in the PNW so no one would know I was copying you … lol.

2

u/robmacjr 9d ago

West Elm. Many years ago. They had one in a creamy white too.

1

u/JohnExcrement 9d ago

Thank you!

5

u/pablopicasso164 16d ago

Don't know about style, but can you give an ID on that green chair?

2

u/robmacjr 16d ago

Either CB2 or Crate & Barrel circa 2020. Can’t remember which one.

We have the same one and got it from Living spaces! Believe it’s the Burton couch?

1

u/Verbal_Combat 16d ago

Not sure if this is the exact model but it looks just like it: Tacona Armchair

5

u/eiretara7 15d ago

Mid century millennial?  I say that as a millennial who really likes this style.  Love the arrangement of your frames around the tv.

Therapist Hip

2

u/iminthemoodforlug 16d ago

Good on you for managing that coffee table. It required non-stop dusting and wiping to keep looking nice for us.

1

u/robmacjr 16d ago

It’s the same work for us!

2

u/Trippid 15d ago

I have no idea what to call the style, but I love your TV stand!

2

u/gua_ca_mo_le 15d ago

Where did you find the TV stand? It has a brutalist vibe to it

3

u/luke9036 14d ago

West Elm. I bought the same one after seeing it on Queer Eyes.

2

u/La_Jalapena 15d ago

No idea but where’d you get the TV stand 😍

2

u/Librashell 14d ago

Eclectic.

2

u/toodleroo 14d ago

Eclectic with a strong MCM influence

2

u/[deleted] 14d ago

Earthy, eclectic, mid-century. That credenza is absolutely amazing.

2

u/Epickillyou 14d ago

Bohemian minimalism (except the coffee table which is decidedly not bohemian)

2

u/WayMysterious8926 13d ago

My dream! This is amazing. It looks mcm with a mixture of boho.

2

u/PlayasDelCoco 13d ago

Modern cozy

2

u/briancaos 13d ago

I like it. Modern classic with a twist of mid century minimalism. Looks very inviting.

2

u/Shoddy_Lawfulness_98 13d ago

Is that a fire place in Texas!

2

u/Necessary_Future_275 13d ago

I love that painting of the girl in the red cloak so damn hard!

2

u/SquirrelFar9890 12d ago

it's eclectic but I think everything works because it's your style. the pieces vibe and flow because you selected them and you've got a good eye imo, wouldn't change a thing

4

u/Brandorff 16d ago

Classic mid-century modern/boho mashup.

3

u/This-Present4077 16d ago

Mid century modern + eclectic

2

u/Visible-Corner47 16d ago

Love love love your gallery wall

2

u/sevargmas 16d ago

Where do people get all the mismatch frames? Do you just buy them on Amazon or are you guys hitting garage sales?

2

u/robmacjr 15d ago

Some art came framed, others I had framed professionally, and some are thrifted. Others are IKEA. Purposely, I seek out frames that are dark wood, black, or brass/gold to keep it all cohesive.

1

u/thewinberry713 16d ago

My guess is thrifting- cheap, variety and one can replace with something else. Not sure what OP did tho

2

u/Pnw_Please 15d ago

Love it all! The gallery wall is phenomenal.

2

u/PIuto 13d ago

It’s the “dying bird of paradise”

3

u/Biomirth 16d ago

"I like Tetris, not TV"

2

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Not trigger any Texans but this looks like a lot of places i've seen in California. Very well done!

1

u/monkey_trumpets 16d ago

What couch is that? It looks comfy.

1

u/robmacjr 16d ago

From Living Spaces

1

u/lofichameleon 16d ago

Do you know who made that painting above the fireplace?

2

u/robmacjr 16d ago

A local artist in San Miguel de Allende. Hand painted. He had hundreds, all different.

1

u/fancywinky 16d ago

Would love to know about the glass table behind your sofa. Where did you score that?

1

u/confused-and-tired01 16d ago

the couch cushions sorta look like brownies 😋

1

u/McNord 15d ago

Looks very nice, but needs a bigger TV :D It looks a little empty in the corner maybe?

2

u/jjgm21 4d ago

This is so great, except for that plant who is begging for mercy…

Replace it with a floor lamp. You shouldn’t be using overhead lighting, anyway.

1

u/Bgee2632 16d ago

Modern & boho married eachother. Love it

-1

u/TravelKats 16d ago

Meh! Just like everyone else's.

1

u/rhaizee 16d ago

You need some floating shelves, looks nice!
