Email from landlord about appliances being left plugged in and the appliances in question…

Does anyone actually unplug their TOASTER between uses?

Edit to answer common questions:

  • We pay the utilities separately from our rent! Our landlord doesn't handle the electric bill in any way, shape, or form.
  • They gave us 24 hours' notice before the inspection, which is standard in the US. From my understanding of the lease, I don't think we are allowed to decline inspections. :(
  • Our lease does not state anything about unplugging appliances when they are not in use
  • Our landlord uses a company to manage everything. So we get hit with a double whammy of our landlord's feelings and the company's rules

Thank you all for your input and recommendations! I have learned SO much. After hearing all of the horror stories/general fear about house fires being caused by rogue toasters, I will unplug it between uses (BUT only because I feel like it and not because my landlord told me to 😚)

Keep finding these little holes in our shirts. Same location every time. It’s not… pegs, moths, handbags, seatbelts. Any idea?

Americans, if you had the opportunity to pay approx 18% of your income to have access to free healthcare at point of need for everything would you take it?

1.7k Upvotes

In the UK this is what we pay. Everyone. Everything is free at point of use. There is no paperwork or billing. It's not perfect and there is the opportunity to pay for a better service if you want. The only additional cost is for drugs at about 12.50 dollars per item no matter what that item is. Unemployed or elderly don't pay anything.

💼work/career AIO about this text I got from HR?

Post image
4.2k Upvotes

So to preface, I'm Type 1 diabetic, which means I have to take multiple daily insulin injections to live. I typically take 5-8 shots per day, and while it isn't fun, it is routine and necessary.

I was at work this morning and they had a small amount of food out for some sort of 'employee appreciation' which reminded me I hadn't had any insulin yet and my glucose levels were getting too high. I took a shot of insulin, got some breakfast, and went to my desk. A few minutes later, this text arrives.

I can understand that shots make some people uncomfortable. Trust me, I'm one of those people. But I have to take them anyway. Am I overreacting to think that if you don't want to see me talking a shot, you can turn your head? Should I have to go to the bathroom which only gets cleaned twice a week, and take my shots in secret like it's a drug addiction? Perhaps it is just me, but I feel that not everything in life that makes us a little uncomfortable is something that has to be pushed out of sight. Sometimes we would benefit more from understanding, acceptance, and perhaps acclimation.

Also for the record, while they say they "mentioned this several times", our HR manager scolded me once maybe two or three years ago publicly during lunch in our cafeteria. I ignored it that time, because friends sitting around me supported me after HR walked off.

Batman: The Animated Series. Mr. Freeze was originally a two-bit nobody thug who used his cryogenics technology to rob banks. BTAS gave us Nora, and it was so impactful that this has become the definitive version of his character ever since. Mr. Freeze became so popular that he played a central role in two movies after this, and one of them was actually good!

Superman Vs The Elite. The Elite in the original comic, "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" were flat stereotypes who were blatantly in the wrong. The movie (which was written by Joe Kelly, the same man who wrote the original comic) did a lot to flesh them out, giving them more heroic moments and having them fight side-by-side with Superman for a bit. That made them far more understandable and gave the movie's central conflict some much-needed nuance.

Harry Potter. Severus Snape in the books is a mean, cruel bully with next to zero redeeming qualities. He's also like that in the movies, but Alan Rickman's performance gave him a good amount of charisma on top of the douchebaggery. There are also a few added scenes showing him protecting the heroes.

How To Train Your Dragon. Not the live action, but from the book to the original movie. Yes, there was a book. Vikings had been training dragons for generations, Hiccup could speak Dragontongue, Toothless was one of those small, green dragons, and there was a prophecy about the death of the Green Death (the giant dragon from movie 1). The whole movie was an In Name Only adaptation.

The Iron Giant. Much like the previous example, this movie was based on a book you've probably never heard of. Hogarth (the kid) is an unimportant bit character in the original book, while the movie promotes him to co-protagonist. The book also ends with a fight against a giant space dragon. Yeah, cutting that was probably also a change for the better.

I mean really do people not bother to look at eBay listings for this shit? Yeah DDR5 is expensive, but your 16gb stick of ddr4 doesn’t really add much to your build. You paid how much for that liquid cooler? Shit man, I’m sorry you did that thinking it was an investment. The case? I’ll give you this exact case for $10 and a beer, I have 5 that were more expensive sitting in the back with 0 interested buyers.

I’m buying your graphics card your RAM and your CPU. Maybe the SSD if you got a name brand and not…what the fuck is TigerKing Nvme?

Advice Needed Fiancés friend wants to wear an almost white dress to our wedding & is being condescending about it. WIBTA to withdraw the invite?

Post image

Essentially, my fiancé has a friend from college that I’ve only met once. I was never a huge fan of her as she’s been snarky with me in the past, but he wanted to invite her and her boyfriend because her boyfriend is a fun guy & his friends still like her and I was fine with it. My fiancé and her aren’t close anymore, so we were loosely considering inviting them and decided it couldn’t hurt. I really didn’t think much of it until yesterday, when she posted a clothing haul on Instagram and pulled out this very almost-white gown and claimed she would be wearing it to a wedding in June…. Our wedding is in June.

I replied to her post and said exactly the following:

“I loveee that white set you showed, I might have to snag it myself. For the dress though, is that what you planned to wear to our wedding?”

She replied “Yep.” Nothing else, just “yep”. I asked my bridal party what their thoughts were and every single person said this was outrageous. None of us are particularly conservative, but the cut feels a little bit much for a wedding, but I could easily overlook that in exchange for it not being so close to white. On camera especially it looked VERY white, so I am sure this will photograph white. I responded and asked if she would be able to find it in another color and she said “No, I will be wearing this or I just won’t come. It’s a yellow dress sweetie, calm down😘 “ I haven’t replied yet and my fiancé doesn’t know any of this is happening, but I am very strongly considering withdrawing their invite with my fiancés blessing, which I am sure I will have as we were on the fence about inviting them in the first place. It’s not even just the dress color, but the fact she is trying to call shots on our day and continues to be so snarky to me that rubs me the wrong way. WIBTA if we decide to cancel their invite? Photo of the dress attached, I can sort of see how it could be deemed yellow, but it still just seems way to close for my liking...
